Big 12 media days: Welcome back
Published: 7/21/2008 10:13 PM

Big 12 football media days represent a back-to-work event for many sports writers trying to squeeze vacation into an ever shortening summer schedule.

It's never easy to let go of the leisure. But for some reason, I feel as eager to bear down on covering Sooner football – or, today and tomorrow at least, Big 12 football (OU arrives Wednesday morning) – as I ever have. A few thoughts about the day:

New Nebraska coach Bo Pelini went first, and he spoke in glowing terms of Bob Stoops and looked assured. Mike Leach was entertaining as ever, even inviting the some 400 media members to Lubbock for a steak. Gary Pinkel said all the right things as usual, and you still want to believe them. And Mike Sherman, new coach at Texas A&M, sounded comfortable and confident if not a little unsettled to see so many writers interested in college football (he's been in the NFL too long).

I'm looking forward to tomorrow. …

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel is definitely a breath of fresh air.

In an era filled with the Sam Bradfords of the sports world – maybe the galaxy's nicest guy, but about as revealing with a quote as a can of tuna – Daniel isn't afraid to say what's on his mind.

Asked point blank if he's the best quarterback in the Big 12, Daniel's response took about two microseconds.

"Of course," he said. …

Prize for the worst/best media guide goes to Missouri, again. There are no records, no year-by-year scores, no recap of '07, no lettermen's list.

The only mention of a 38-7 Cotton Bowl win over Arkansas is at the bottom of the inside back cover. Tony Temple's 281 rushing yards against the Razorbacks got a one-line entry at the bottom of an inside page.

Bad enough. But topping that is an 10-page photo section of the program's equipment endorsements, including a full page on the 20 different type of facemasks and another illustrating the four different types of chinstraps.

Yet, the book itself looks the sharpest of the 12 conference guides. Don't judge a book by its cover, eh?

And to add to the irritation, the pages are sideways. OK. …

Good Luck Sooners!
Today I had the unfortunate luck of taking my lunch break with ESPN replay of last years OU Texas Tech Game on TV.
I was only able to see the condensed first half of that game.
Sam Bradford had suffered ANOTHER bell ringer as the result of a fumble early in the game. I wish Sam a great year. But I do think he might be prone to concusions just as a former Colorado QB had back in 2001 ( I think)
The Red Raiders then took off and proceeded to score at will. A second look at the game pointed out some things that I hope the Stoops coaching staff will learn from for this year.
First the Sooners Must let the back up QB's get more playing time during any game that the Sooners are winning with a comfortable margin. I mean playing time in the 3rd quarter and not the last 4 minutes of a game.
The other thing that caught my eye was that conditioning seemed to be lacking in the last months of the season. The OU Defense spent most of their time on the field in the first half do to Tech scoring at will and an OU offense with a QB who had only taken 15 snaps and had tossed only 2 passes prior to game 10 of the season last year. Most of the time the OU D were sucking air and had their hands on their hips trying to get more air after ever play. Also the Sooners did not hardly do any substituting of D players which as we all know added to the fatigue issue.
It is the little things that make the biggest difference with a football team when key players get hurt or injured. Adaptability is another key to winning the BIG games. Who ever comes off the bench should think and play like the game is theirs to win or loose, instead of coming in to fill in a spot.
