Big Pickens

There's a terrific article about huge boosters in USA Today today.

The focal point is the Uconn donor who wanted his bread back when they wouldn't hire who he wanted.

Featured in the article is T. Boone Pickens, the largest of the whale boosters.

In the piece, T. Boone says that he usually in contact with the people at OSU at least once a day!

It is also suggested that no important decisions are made without his input.

The article suggests this tag might be applicable.

Coach Pickens.

Is the true intent in donating huge sums of money to help improve your university, or to 'assist' in the decision making? I think we know that answer.

And note the influence in things like the
veterinary school. You can call him Coach and Dean.

Now that we know Booster's who donate large sums of cash want input, tell me how $5 billion dollars being bet on the Super Bowl has no input on the players, coaches, & referee's & you'll watch a "clean" game.

I think many would be surprised on how many college & pro games have been tanked or altered by someone taking a payoff. You put enough $$$ on the table, someone will listen.

Laff, players make so much, they wouldn't need to monkey with anything. It would be too obvious, anyhow. Zebras, now that's another matter all together.....

Laff, yes the games moves pretty fast for players to be involved. I was warned by a local bookie 25 years or so ago not to bet on a Falcons game because the "fix" was in with a part time bartender who happened to be the emergency place kicker and sure enough he missed a chip shot fg and one or 2 extra points and was released the next day. If Pickens is coaching OSU he's doing a pretty good job (excepting usual nemesis-OU).

I still have a gut feeling that Dez Bryant threw the that game against Houston before the NCAA came down on him for hanging out with Deion. The Amazing Dez seemed to drop every ball and make dumb mistakes the whole game. A lot of money to be had especially since Houston was under the radar and most of the pros were picking OSU in that game.

Call me crazy but that game has always made me wonder.

Let's say granny has a habit of sending you $100 a week because she thinks you're just the bee's knee's. On your birthday, along with cash, she sends a new outfit she picked out. What the heck are you going to wear on your next visit to granny's? How will granny feel if you don't wear that outfit? Nothing has truly changed since the beginning of mankind.

Granny have a daughter?

T. Boone is the collegiate equivalent of Jerry Jones.

Doesn't Phil Knight contribute more to Oregon athletics than T. Boone? T. Boone I don't think has nearly done the scale Knight has. But Knight, like Pickens, is included in discussions and decisions related to athletics. And maybe rightfully so. It shouldn't be their "final" decision to make, but if they are going to contribute so much that OSU and Oregon benefit, shouldn't they at least be at the table, part of the hiring committee, and be heard?

Hedged -

You do realize that Dez Bryant had a punt return TD in the Houston game, yes?

I hate for facts to get in the way of your conspiracy theory.
freeballnit (2 years ago)
I see a conspiracy: T. Boone PICKENS. The PICKER. And Mark Sanchez, maybe the real PICKER. Hmmm...
freeballnit (2 years ago)
Just who is The Picker? Even if Mark Sanchez isn't, he may have laid claim to the title by one-upping The Picker.
freeballnit (2 years ago)
I challenge you "The Picker" to outdo Sanchez.

I think we finally found someone who can Outpick The Picker!

Your people are so funny.

Perhaps you can turn this creativity toward solving the in-state college basketball horrors, donors calling the shots at major universities, and the Skip Bayless problem, which is that he is on the air.
wgspost (2 years ago)
Pickens is a terrific example of what's wrong with college football (among other things). He's the equivalent of a drug company/oil company/banking (take your pick) lobbyist. Only difference is, the lobbyists are getting a return on their money.

Picker -

aren't your first two problems related? donors and in-state basketball?
mgsooner (2 years ago)
At what point does "booster" become "owner"?
hoss cartwright (2 years ago)
How could somebody who writes for the TW ask how Bayless is on the air? A better question is, " How does sittler have a job at a paper?"
Thunder196 (2 years ago)
Hey Boone, how high did you say we are suppose to jump? How many hoops do we jump through?
Don's World (2 years ago)
So WG you are worried that T. isn't getting his monies worth?

Hmm I haven't heard any complaint from OSU about the gift. So I am not quite sure where the problem lies. Anyone have problem with T. doing a little jock sniffing for his gift? I sure don't and I am OU guy. It would be downright rude to deny him access to something he loves and invested so much in. Anyone catch him on Jon Stewart the other night? Wearing his Orange tie. Doubt there is a whole lot he and I would agree on, but I kinda like the old man. Get back to me when he has head set on and starts calling plays.

Just like it is rude for UCONN donor to ask for money back. Some things just aren't done old boy.
SoonerSkins (2 years ago)
If you're talking about a "Picker" you have to mention Chase Daniel. That boy cannot leave his nose alone.

Is there really any surprise T. Boone makes decisions or input regarding OSU athletics?

OSU has to make him happy or "Sugar Daddy" will get mad and actually spend that $$$$ on his family. Which also seems to be the wiser investment.
SoonerSkins (2 years ago)
Great comment on Basketball's College GameDay today by Rece Davis. Quoted Joe Paterno about donors & boosters, "We want your money, but not your 2 cents."

Obviously, this applies.
TMS (2 years ago)
OSU is fortunate beyond compare to have Boone. A man who has accomplished what he has should be used as input. The only people resenting Boone are those against the OSU program.

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
