Big Ten Bums
Published: 9/21/2010 3:31 PM

For a number of years we here at the Picks have called out the Big Ten as the worst of the majors.

Why?

Because it hasn't done much of note.

The response to the dressing down of the Big Ten was heated, as fans of these big 'ol lumbering clubs cried foul.

So this year we tried to pretend that the a Ten gap didn't exist, to pretend that on any given day, big 'ol guys might get in the way of the much speedier SEC teams, and appear competitive.

Then this rolls around.

Football fans of all ages and real conferences, get your Forward buttons ready.

Look at this week's Big Ten schedule.

Northern Colorado at Michigan State.
Central Michigan at Northwestern.
Bowling Green at Michigan.
Austin Powers (Peay) at Wisconsin.
Ball State at Iowa.
Toledo at Purdue.
Eastern Michigan at Ohio State.
Temple at Penn State.
Akron at Indiana.
Northern Illinois at Minnesota.
Illinois is off.

For the first time in major college history, an entire conference has sold out.

Armed with a blank sheet of paper in a trusty IBM Selectric, hellbent on comedic effect, you could not invent a funnier fictitious schedule.

You have a blank sheet of paper in your trusty IBM Selectric. You're hellbent on comedic effect. You could not invent a funnier fictitious schedule than the actual one cited above.

With a computer, editing on the fly, the first version would disappear in favor of the second version. That would be (practically) impossible with the trusty IBM Selectric. Although, the "correction" key, with lift-off tape was indistinguishable from magic when it appeared.

There was a tactile satisfaction in using that ancient technology. Still, the present is better than the past.

The Big 10? Old technology. Nebraska is going someplace different, not someplace better.

You know it's a lousy schedule for this week when the best team the Big Ten plays against is Temple.

The Big Ten is a 267 and 1/2 point favorite over this collection.

Ok Picker, you just said that the big ten is the worst of the majors, and yet in the previous blog you rated Iowa in your top ten. The same Iowa that lost to Arizona. How do you dog on the big ten and put one of their teams in your top ten that just lost? Just asking. I have a feeling that you are just going to ignore that. I understand that you write things to get people to post, but for someone that should be reasonably educated shouldn't you be able to realize when you are going back and forth on what you say and not ever being consistent. I hope that you don't think that people are that stupid. Yes you did get me to make a post, but why not have something intelligent to say or did you use that up on your books?

Good call, but then again upon closer inspection the Big 12 seems to enjoy the same type of scheduling. Texas took the only chance years ago scheduling UCLA. The rest of the schools loaded up on training wheels as well- let's face it the only other two decent schools are UCF who plays K-State and scheduled back when they were a decent high school team in Fl. and Cincinnati ( a honest to gosh flash in the pan, one hit wonder), scheduled back when they offered the Sooners a chance to take a side trip to King's Island or Newport KY depending on your tastes in nightime entertainment.

Scheduling by Mr Softee as well.

Sold out is right!!

Eh, this is a bit skewed. Let's not act like the Big 10 hasn't scheduled difficult opponents. It just so happened that all the cream puffs landed in the same week.

Penn State has played Alabama
Ohio State has played Miami
Iowa has played Arizona
Minnesota has played USC
Illinois has played Missouri
Michigan, Michigan St. and Purdue have all played Notre Dame

Actually, its not a terrible schedule. Many of the teams are MAC schools which offer a regional opponent. I would propose that any FBS school who schedules an FCS opponent automatically be disqualified from BCS bowl consideration. It is the only way to ensure that the exhibition games against FCS schools are not counted as actual victories (then again, Virginia Tech didn't do itself any favors, nor Minnesota).

And Mixed-Up Mike, you have just cited 8 games out of a total possibility of 40+ played in 4 weeks. Discounting the games versus Notre Dame (since they are terrible and would finish 7th or lower in the Big Ten), the Big 10 won exactly 1 of those games (Ohio State vs. Miami) Matter of fact, the other games were not all that competitive at all. But I will say that the Big Ten is more worthy of a BCS bid than the ACC and Big East whose teams have looked like cream puffs on the schedule against the SEC and Big XII.

Austin "Powers" !!! Love it. I don't even know where APU is, and I've been in academia for 30 years. No jokes about "Ball" State or Toledo. Come on, Pick, you can do better than that. But honestly, wouldn't it be hilarious if some of these Big 10 pansies actually lost? No matter what the point spread, it wouldn't be shocking, now would it?
Man, I just hate seeing the Huskers lower themselves to the level of these woosies.

Are you watching the SEC this year? With the exception of Bama, the rest of the league looks normal, if not below average. Ole Miss(Cotton Bowl champs) loses to Vandy, Florida looks terrible on offense (could have easily lost to Miami of Ohio!). And if you go by the Picker's views, something as all-powerful as the SEC isnt entitled to a 'down' year. After all, best players and best coaches in the country right Pick??

BLA, you've missed the point entirely...again. The Big 10 doesn't just schedule creampuffs and one big game per OOC schedule is usually good enough. There were more tough matchups in the Big 10 as well. Those are just the ones I could think of off hand.

And what does the Big 10's record against those teams have to do with anything? The argument was over the strength of schedule.

I would be shocked by your post, but then again, this is all coming from the guy who said "TU's offense will give OSU fits."
