Big or Average 12?

Does the Big 12 still play football?

One Big 12 player was drafted in the first round of the NFL draft, o-n-e!

That one player was the cornerback from KU.

That's beyond unbelievable. That's bad.

It shows how far teams like the Aggies and Nebraska have fallen -- they don't even KNOW anybody who was drafted in the first round.

USC alone had four players drafted in the top round.

The Big Ten seems to have a player drafted every 15 minutes. Makes you wonder why the Big Ten can't win a game. Bad coaching could be why.

The Big 12 is said to be a quarterback's league. Yet, will ANY of the hot quarterbacks play in the NFL? And not at safety or wide receiver!

Anybody seen a great player in these parts?

Man, it shows you how out of touch most of these fans are about their teams. If you listened to the Sports Animal, you would have thought Kelly and Smith would have gone nine and ten in the first round. Time to get real. QB league? Please, name one good QB from that league. Hell there are more starting QBs from C-USA in the league than the big 12.

For OSU, 165 million got them less draft picks than Tulsa. Ouch, you all suck. Shoot them guns, boys!

Did any watch Brennan Marion burn Reggie Smith's butt during the entire TU vs. OU game? How can you be surprised here? An extra year would have just exposed Reggie even more. Good move on jumping early, bro.
All those guys would have been better off staying in school.

Can the Missouri quarterback play in the NFL?

Third-rounder?

I've got to feel this is mostly an aberration and that the "12" is loaded with sophomores and juniors ready to go. Some darn good running backs come from this conf although I'm stymied on the QB picks and am beginning to think the NFL scouts don't know diddly when it comes to picking QB's.
TAB (5 years ago)
If Paul Smith is too short for the league, bet your Al Esbach speech impediment that Daniel won't go far.
MIKE (5 years ago)
As far as the QBs go, its tough to tell where any of them would go in the draft regardless of conference. Why pick up a Ryan Leaf in the 1st round when you can pick up a Tom Brady in the 8th? The draft goes in cycles as to which positions are the hot commodities. It used to be skilled positions but as of late it has turned to the essential positions (DTs, OLs, etc.). I don't think many of the Big 12 QBs strong points will transfer well to the NFL. The Big 12 is LOADED with great quarterbacks--but they are great COLLEGE QBs. Reference Eric Crouch as a prime example.

Why so anti-big 12? How about 22 first rounders in the last 5 years and a projected 7 for next year. I do realize that I am officially a loser for even glancing at a 2009 draft projection, but I'm cool with it. BTW 4 sooners are projected in next years first round, #8 being one Sam Bradford. I don't think he will leave next year but, his quick release, size and accuracy are very attractive to the
NFL. Stick to flowers and snauzers JC. Leave the nfl talk to geeks like me, and get off of the big 12!!

oops oops sorry for the echo echo
chris (5 years ago)
Bradford the #8 pick? I can't even laugh at that joke.

Any third-string DE that has decent speed would hurt him bad at the next level.

If he gets drafted that high, what a bust.
rp (5 years ago)
Chris, I can't tell if you think he is too slow, or not tough enough or both?? Either way I don't think it's relevant, just look at the best two QB's in the league, Brady and Manning. Neither one would scare me in a dark alley, and they couldn't outrun their own shadow. Anyway that's just my opinion, it just happens to be right.
World Picker (5 years ago)
I'm not anti Big 12.
The NFL is anti Big 12 this draft.
MIKE (5 years ago)
RP, I'm sorry but no, your opinion is not correct. Far from it in fact. I appreciate the fact you are a sooner fan and you're obviously praising your boy Bradford, but come on. First of all, when was the last time ANY QB was drafted early based on throwing ability alone? By the way, did you really compare him to Manning and Brady? Here's a couple things they have that Bradford doesn't: Experience, poise, and toughness. Not to say that Bradford won't have these traits in the future, but if you really think he is being taken at ANY POINT in next year's draft, you need to take off the crimson colored goggles.
MIKE (5 years ago)
By the way RP, who can outrun their own shadow? I think you used the wrong saying for this analogy...when in Rome, right?
rp (5 years ago)
It's not my draft projection idiot, I said I didn't think he would even come out early, much less get drafted that high, I was simply letting chris know that his 3rd string DE dribble was stupid, and no I didn't compare him to Manning or Brady, and I am not an OU fan. I simply passed on what I saw on walterfootball. 2009 draft projection because it was topical. I have nothing to do with the web site, nor the projections genius. I was just as surpriseed to see him on the list at all. So all of your points were misplaced And I am right by the way, running QBs in the pros and foot speed for QBs are overated skills in the league.
Mike, try reading slowly, and I will stop attempting to use analogies.
MIKE (5 years ago)
Oh RP, you silly baffoon. First of all, if all you were doing was comparing foot speed maybe you should have thrown the hundreds of non-successful QBs in the example along with Brady and Manning. Or is it pure coincidence that you only picked those two? By the way, foot speed and the ability to improvise under pressure by scrambling are UNDERRATED, not over. Go ask Favre, Elway, Young, Bradshaw, Romo, Garrard etc. Can you survive on these abilities alone? Of course not. But I guarantee a team will get a lot farther with a QB with them than a QB without them. Try typing slower and you may be able to form sentences that are grammatically correct and formulate theories that actually make sense.
Chris (5 years ago)
RP, you have got to be kidding me! My example of a DE hitting Bradford is dead-on. He is slow, and to think that footspeed and reaction times are overrated in the NFL just shows how little you know about the league.

Do you watch NFL games? Just curious? Or does your T.V. only get OU football?

Comical.
rp (5 years ago)
Again Mike, misplaced , I never brought up improvisation skills, scrambling ability, dealing with pressure, none of the above. Those are obviously important, I dont know who you are arguing with? Again, read slowly, and calm down.
Blair (5 years ago)
Bradford is not an NFL quarterback, at least not yet. Partially retarded QBs could pass in the pocket the OU offensive line created last season. I do think OU has one or two hogs that will warrant first round attention next year. But Bradford? That is delusional.

Not sure the comments about his athletic ability are accurate, I happen to think he is a SUPER athlete. But he didn't show me last year that he could win a game or carry his team when it needed him. I think he has poor pocket awareness, or perhaps he was just shocked when a defensive lineman actually beat of the OU hogs up front.

I also have concerns about his ability to make throws under duress and also on the run. That goes a little to athletic ability, but Sam is a better athlete than Paul Smith....But Paul Smith was money on every throw (standing, running, walking, whatever).

Having seen Sam play a full year, I don't see him drafted any higher than the 3rd round, and that could change as the talent around him either increases or decreases. I think he is a fine college quarterback, I think he will be consistently good at Oklahoma. It's hard not to at least be decent with that supporting cast. Unfortunately the NFL requires a little more than that.
chris (5 years ago)
Blair,

I will agree with you that Bradfor is a good athlete. But I will say that I disagree wtih you that he is more athletic then Paul Smith.

You put Smith on that OU team, they probably won't lose a game the last couple of years. He is a gamer, and has the tools to create plays. He also has good pocket awareness and quickness.

I think Sam will develop a sense in the pocket, and hopefully his foot spead and decision making will get better.

But as RP said, a projected #8 pick in the first round? Laughable.
chris (5 years ago)
Oops, I meant foot speed, not foot spead.
Jeff (5 years ago)
Chris said, "You put Smith on that OU team, they probably won't lose a game the last couple of years. He is a gamer, and has the tools to create plays. He also has good pocket awareness and quickness. "

Then how do you explain all the passes he threw to the other team over the years? I'm not talking about the tips or deflections, but the perfect strikes to opposing players.
Tom (5 years ago)
As Bill Self would say, "Guys, Guys!" I'm not an OU fan and am a TU fan, but no way OU would have been more successful with Smith. OU has a different scheme so how could you tell. I can say that Bradford would not have fared so well under TU's scheme, but I'm not sure what this argument has to do with anything. I personally would rather have Smith NOW on my NFL team because of his CAREER performance. Bradford's just taking off. He stands fearless in the pocket and throws frozen ropes with accuracy over great distances. These kinds of guys win Super Bowls (see Kurt Warner).

Sometimes receivers run the wrong way. LOL
