Big or Medium Game Bob?
Published: 12/15/2008 5:01 PM
Last Modified: 12/15/2008 5:01 PM

Will the national championship game turn into another USC for the Sooners?

That was the game that caused us to downgrade the coach's nickname to Medium Game.

Here are the arguments for and against such a frightening USC-like possibility.

No, it won't be another USC because:

1. Sam Bradford is too good.

His accuracy is uncanny.

He is just quick enough to get out of the way of rushers.

Yes, all signs point to the game stacking up as another USC-type fiasco.

1. The Venables D can't handle a quarterback who can run and pass.

True, Bronco Tebow throws some quackers. But usually the receivers are five yards open.

2. The Heismann snub.

Bronco Tebow was left off 154 Heismann ballots, mostly from voters in the heartland sick and tired of eliteist eastern and southern media punks telling them what to do.

To this we say: tough.

But the voice of Billy Sims yelling "Boomer," echoing off the hallowed halls of gridiron humility and grace, as John Heismann spins in his resting place, is enough to make anybody mad.

3. The SEC is really good.

This isn't Nebraska. This isn't Colorado.

4. The Big 12 is overrated.

This isn't Texas Tech, Missouri or Kansas

5. The homers have convinced many that the game is a toss-up.

6. OU's recent unpleasant bowl performances, combined with Bradford being distracted.

Conclusion: It starting to look a little like USC.

Bonus reason to encourage OU: Many will proclaim Florida is a lock.

Reasons that this is more like Florida vs Nebraska:

1) Bradford is the best qb ever in college football
2) The SEC is overrated. OU isnt Mississippi...LSU....or Georgia
3) Florida lost its signal caller and will be distracted
4) OU has problems with qbs that improvise and run fast. Tebull has mostly set running plays...option like (we kill teams that run the option) and Tebull isnt that fast..just big. Pretty sure tackling him wont be tough as catching mccoy, robinson, or griffin.
5) WE SCORE 60 pts a game you joker!
Dan the Man (4 years ago)
You tell him ERIC! Tebull is just full of BULL and won't be able to get up off his buttocks to throw the ball because he will be on his back. Tebull has that smirk on his face because Bradford slapped it on him with HIS Trophy!!!!

I think that Florida should be favored over OU. Why? Answer: Florida is a better defensive football team than OU is. While OU gives up 24 points per game, Florida gives up only about 12 points per game. In the two biggest games of the year, OU gave up a combined 86 points to Texas and OSU. In Florida's two biggest games, they gave up a combined 30 points to Georgia and Alabama. Florida has better offensive talent than Texas and OSU. In addition, this is a very good defense that OU will be facing. If OU cannot slow down those two teams (Texas and OSU), Boise State, West Virginia, and Kansas State, how can they slow down Florida's offense? In their past three BCS bowl games, OU has given up a combined 146 points. That's nearly 50 points per game. Sure, OU will be able to score some points, but, the team with the better defense wins the game. Because Florida has played better defense than OU this season, you have to give Florida about a two-touchdown edge. I do root for OU Football and hope they win; however, based on OU's defensive performance this season and in previous BCS bowl games, Florida should most definitely be favored over OU.

The SEC is a terrible offensive conference this year. Using the defensive rankings and stats to compare the SEC defenses vs the Big 12 defenses just doesn't make sense. No one plays offense in that conference. Anyone who says the SEC is better than the Big 12 this year just hasn't been watching many games. It's not even close! You are going to give up more ppg if you are playing OSU, TTech, Texas, and Mizzu than what you would to Alabama, Georgia, Tenn, and South Carolina. I mean can you really even compare those offenses? You can, but it wouldn't make sense. If OU protects the ball like they have all year, and causes turnovers like they have all year, this game won't even be close. OU is 5-1 vs ranked teams this year, Florida is 2-1. I'm not convinced that Florida is a top 5 team this year. OU 45 - Florida 31.

Eric, bet you don't score 60 this night. Your a fool!!!
jj (4 years ago)
the problem is not containing Tebow or tackling tebow, OU can slow him down enough. the question is can OU keep from letting Florida score on kickoffs. it is easier to play defense when you play the offenses of tenn, sc, lsu & ole miss. oh, by the way how did that work out again?

I guess you could have said "anything is possible, or I have no clue or my conclusions add up to zero." What does coach Jones think?
The truth will shine through or around or under or something.
There might might be a little light around McCoy and the D ends.
Robinson and Daniel ran around a lot when nothing was open.
I believe I heard a lot about the OU D couldn't contain a mobil quarterback.
Tebow is not a good passing quarterback.
He can run around all day looking good. OU will take the ball down the field.
The Gators will throw everthing at Bradford in the 1st Qtr. He may be shaky, BUT he will settle down and Forida will die with man to man.
The running game will start to open up a bit (also shaky in the beginning).
Tebow will run around looking good.
You will write a column stating "Tebow ran OU silly, Venables should be fired. Oklahoma was just plain lucky to win that game."
Rhett Bomar (4 years ago)
55-19 and Tebow will be thanking the lord by halftime. However, Sammy will be elected tribal prez for his valiant 13 for 36 effort. I think I saw Granger at a Burlington Coat factory store here in Coral Gables...

Reason for optimism: OU's D is under-rated. Maybe not great (or as great as they should be), but they've been okay in games where Special Teams have held together. D is taking a lot of abuse for the sins of Special Teams.

Reason for pessimism: No reason to think Special Teams will hold it together.

How good is Florida's defense? Who the heck knows. Let them play UT or Tech or OSU or Kansas or Mizzou or even Cincy and see how good it is. ESPN tells me that USC has the best defense in the country. Yea, they really shut down the offensive powerhouses out west. Seriously, how good would OU's D be (or be considered) if they played a Pac-10 slate. OR...Would OU give up more than 20 against Bama? Probably. Would they score more than 31? More than likely.

Comparing conference strengths is alchemy. Who's better, Nebraska or Ole Miss? WHO CARES? That has no relevance to OU/Florida.

Didn't somebody say the best defense wins championships?
World Picker (4 years ago)
Wasn't OU star runner Murray hurt returning a kickoff?

Why would anybody ever put the best runner in to return kicks?

It's target practice.

Does the staff get a pass for losing its best runner on kick return duty against a bum?
Travis (4 years ago)
He's been returning kicks his entire career. It's football and injuries happen.
World Picker (4 years ago)
The question was: Was it the best of ideas to have your best runner returning kicks against a bum?

He wasn't returning kicks early in the year.

Travis (4 years ago)
That's a stupid question. Why would you not have your best return man returning kicks in the conference championship? Hindsight is 20/20.
wreed (4 years ago)
Murray is not a durable back. That is the way it is. All the talent in the world, but tends to be fragile.
Gee coach, I think we should hold Murray out. He might be injured sometime in the future. Well gosh, Let's hold Bradford out too. Well, how about Box and Reynolds?
OU 45- Gators 35. That would seem to solve a lot of conversation.
wreed (4 years ago)
Bye the bye Mr. Picker, Didn't you pick Missouri at or under the spread? You didn't think they were bums this year or last year.
Now that OU rolled them, they are no good.
Dash Riprock (4 years ago)
Didn't OU have Adrian Peterson returning kicks? Mr.Picker, here's a clue just so you'll know...at Stoopsville, they try to put the players that give them the best chance of winning...on the field. Simple. Not hard to understand.

Defense wins championships, unless of course, you outscore that particular defense, comprende?

I know you were trying really hard to figure out a way to blame Venables for Murry's injury, but I see you've already pointed your claw at 'the staff'. Perhaps an 'all inclusive' house cleaning would suit you?
Jeremy (4 years ago)
If returning kickoffs is target practice, does that make a stretch play handed to Murray touch football?? C'mon guys...let's just fire the entire staff at OU and give the picker something else to write about. Bring back John Blake and his wonderful staff. Better yet, let's go get Smellyburger and a case of wine to ring in the New Year. Good grief...Stoops and company have owned the Big 12 and have been in more BCS games than FedEx. Some people are never happy...GEEZ.
IM Right (4 years ago)
Yeah, typical picker 'ville. Gets called out and called down and starts deleting truth. Last time I post to the Green Nugget Picker.
Jeremy (4 years ago)
To be fair, allow me to substantiate my sarcastic post. Picker...I realize that writing about how great the OU staff is doesn't sell newspapers (or create blog hits) as well as writing about their shortcomings. I also expect any journalist worth the paper (or keyboard) he writes on to call it like he sees it. So please respond honestly to this question: after reading your columns and blogs for years and seeing that your criticisms of the OU coaches outnumber the blessings by 10 to 1, do you honestly believe that Bob Stoops is a less-than-great coach when compared to the other 117 (or so) currently employed by FBS schools? Just curious...
World Picker (4 years ago)
Do any other teams have their number one runners running back kicks against bums?

Is the OU staff capable of doing anything wrong?

Do you think you will see again, once, ever, the number one running back returning kicks at OU?

Let's lose the hindsight and focus on Florida.

Which isn't Missouri.

Jeremy (4 years ago)
I think you will find, upon doing sufficient research, that many schools use RB's, WR's, and DB's...all of them starters...to return kicks and punts. The scholarship limits these days and the importance of field position dictate using starters on special teams. I don't fault the coaches for using Murray on kick returns any more than I fault them using Iglesias. And yes, the coaching staff makes mistakes...all staffs do. We should keep this in mind when criticizing any staff with the record of Stoops and Co.
Jeremy (4 years ago)
Moving on to Florida. I am in a bowl contest with some buddies (for fun only...smirk). I have taken Florida -3.5 on the main sheet. I may take OU on the other sheet, but maybe not. I think that Florida is the most talented and complete team in the country this year. Oklahoma is probably somewhere between 2 and 4. The Gators have the edge on special teams, and it's a big edge. We can argue which team has the better offense, defense, coaches, etc...but these are all pretty close. I think the Gators massive edge on special teams will be the difference. I see the game playing out much like OU-UT earlier this year. Florida will come up with the plays in the 4th quarter to win it. OU will need to be +2 in turnovers to win and not give up a big return. Hope I am wrong...
World Picker (4 years ago)
Here's when the best runner will run another punk back for OU:

Never.

Ever.

Never.

Once.

Ever.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Punt, punk, little difference.
