Bill Self is Bob Stoops
Published: 3/22/2010 5:49 PM

Thus officially ends the worst major sports season in state history -- no post season basketball victories, one minor bowl win.

And as for the future: More of the same?

OU basketball is in ruin, might have to hurry to finish 11th in the league.

TU hoops, does anybody really care?

OSU hoops, more of the same?

Does ORU still play basketball?

OU football, where's the excitement?

OSU football, a change for the worse?

TU will have to have a decent team to finish .500.

The NCAA tournament proved two important things.

Note to MexiMike: How do you like our Georgia Tech pick over OSU now?

The first thing we have learned is Bill Self is Bob Stoops, which is to say that he is a public relations genius, beloved by his media, each coach having had one sensational run at a national title, then moderate successes. Had Memphis not encouraged KU's win in the title game, Self would be feeling, if not heat, warmth. Excellent coaches, both. Great? Not yet.

The other thing we learned is that superb recruiting can be done at schools TU's size. Anybody who thinks you can't recruit quality talent to TU is nuts.

PS: The Big 12 is a football conference.

Pick, I wish your name was Bubba Cunningham because the sooner TU's AD realizes that there should be no limitations on recruiting to TU, the sooner TU basketball will become relevant again.

Dear Boilermaker,

As an alum of another Big 10 institution I have long been aware of the exuberance displayed by Purdue graduates. However you seem to have dipped in the waters of the Tippecanoe far more than even the standard Boiler fan. Congrats on your team’s performance thus far, I was amazed at what they have done without Hummel, but their journey will end shortly as will that of the Spartans. Both squads are too hobbled to do much more damage, though State ought to last one more game than the Boilers.

Wow! Big 10/11 smack in Tulsa...holy crap, 2012 is real!
BLA (3 years ago)
If Cornell weren't playing Kentucky this week, I'd say ride the Big red to the Final Four. Squad is talented and fundamentally sound and we know who the smartest 5 players on the court play for. Second, surprised at the Big Ten completely, especially Purdue but I think they are at the end of the rope. K State and Baylor...I have them both in the Final Four and think they are primed to make it through this weekend, but it's not going to be easy.

Dear Picker ... please show this to Bubba and Wojo ... wait ... acutally as long as Wojo is around, the talent will not come to TU.

Mark my words...the 2010-2011 Golden Hurricane basketball team will be better than this version. More balance, more grit, and probably a little more of that toughness Coach Wojcik is looking for. More scorers as well. Magley is a beast, Haralson is one of the best outside shooters TU has ever had on campus, Justin Hurtt will be better, and hopefully Donte Medder will be able to come back from his injury to be the playmaker he started to show us he was.

Apologize for the double post

Boiler, yeah, you're right, the Big 10 did show some guts. None of those teams seem to score a lot, but they do dial in on D. Know who else was surprisingly good? Wash, which is on TV every other November -- ESPN is too busy showing Big East practices.

Golden Hurricane, Lance, Bla -- we've been hearing how TU would be much improved "next year" for seven years. The statute of limitations on improvement is almost up. After a while, crying improvement is like crying wolf; or uncle.

This weekend's games look great, with the Baylor-St. Mary's contest figuring to be decided in the last, oh, two seconds. The pick here is the Saint on this one.

The CBS switcheroo coverage strategy has been great, with Bill Raftery coming across as far and away the best play by play announcer.

Well I suppose since I've been called out three separate times, I need to respond.

Unfortunately, I will eat the crow on this one. My Pokes are obviously a shooting team and when the perimeter shots aren't falling, things get rough. That being said, I think there were two other big contributers to the loss as well.

One being Tech's free throw shooting. They shot in the mid 60% range all year and for some reason decided to hit 23 of 24 in that particular game. Go figure.

The refs showed us no mercy whatsoever. Our guards were being body bumped and hand checked all game long and not a whistle was blown. Meanwhile, 5'8" Keiton Page finishes with 4 fouls? Really?

Either way, the recruiting class coming in is much taller (thank goodness) so I look forward to seeing what Coach Ford can do next year.
But What Do I Know? (3 years ago)
I've been thinking the same thing about TU basketball. In fact I talked to my brother about it last night. Here's how it went. "What do small schools like Xavier and St. Mary's have that TU doesn't have? And how does N Iowa get to where they are, even though it's a state school who wants to play BB there? And Cornell?" I sure don't have the answer, but please someone out there tell me!!! And please none of that wait til next year stuff.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Also, in regards to the upcoming OSU football season, I'm not necessarily sold on Holgorsen's style of offense either. I'm not a big fan of such a dedicated passing spread. With that said, his guady offensive numbers at Houston don't lie. We'll see if they can translate to the Big 12.

It is a sad reflection of Purdue University that the first thing that entered your mind was IU grad!!! Surely alums from other conference schools will occasionally acknowledge the Boilermakers?

I applaud Coach Painter's abilities. He truly is a miracle worker having taken the Boilers to the NCAA tournament FOUR whole times!!! I can only envision him standing before the great unwashed masses of West Lafayette and declaring "this is the year that the Boilers will make the elite eight"!!! I can hear the crowds chanting, the alums writing checks for the statue, and even old John Purdue trying to rise from his campus resting place. But all dreams must come to an end little fella, without Hoppy Hummel the Boilers are kaput.

One last thing, as a favor to the good citizens of West Tulsa, please stop hanging out at the Sands Springs switchyards and get back to the basement where you belong.

I love the pokes more than most, bur please don't blame the refs..... that goonerish
Old Titan (3 years ago)
Wow, Pick, and to think I used to consider you clever. Sadly, it's become obvious these days you're simply "mailing it in" with the same old schtick. I'll bet I've read that "does ORU still play basketball?" line from you 3 or 4 times now the last couple of years. Exactly what does that mean, anyway? Are you admitting that you just can't keep up with the program anymore, that it's just too much effort at this stage in your life? Because I can think of no other reason why you would ignore their 3 NCAA and 1 NIT visits in the past six seasons, their four conference championships in the same time, and their wins over Oklahoma State, Tulsa, Kansas, Missouri, Georgetown, Stanford, Seton Hall, USC, New Mexico, etc. along the way. If that's not "playing basketball anymore", I don't know what is. And, if in reply you would rather draw comparisons between ORU's mid-major lot in life these days compared to 30 years ago, be my guest - at least, that might be something worth reading. So instead of the usual tired cliche next time, how about some genuine analysis, with a touch of wit, the way you used to write? Or at this point in your career, am I asking too much?
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Ken, is it more "goonerish" than misspelling simple words?

I'm not saying OSU lost solely because of the refs. They mainly lost because of porous perimeter shooting and incredible (and unlikely) free throw shooting from GT. With that said, the refs certainly didn't do OSU any favors in how they called the game.
SBH (3 years ago)
I agree. This TU coach is shopping himself to Seton and Iowa. It is time to cut ties. 5 years is a enough time.

I am so sick of the overhyping. ESPN does it all year. I think FSN should start positioning itself like FOX news does against the mainstream. In our case, they should just constantly berate ESPN as being in capable of being critical. They need some snarky Picker-O'reilly types on there to just trash ESPN on a regular basis. Did you see that BS Tom renaldi interview? ESPN used to be cool with stuff like Playmakers. Now they are just major suck faces. I don't know how Simmons is going to survive there.

Hey Picker,
How about your questioning of the OU Women's Basketball team even being ranked in the top 50? Not one word about that now that the OU women are in the Sweet 16. Um, yeah, you were wrong, Pick. What about Sherri Coale being an overrated head coach? I guess 4 Sweet 16 appearances in 5 years isn't good enough.

Playing a defensive basketball style isn't going to win the C-USA. You need to get some quickness and play better on the offensive side of the ball. UTEP, Memphis, and Houston both have fast paced offenses. TU needs a fast paced offense in order to win the C-USA title.

sorry about the spelling mike.....kidney stones....meds were getting to me

see what u mean now.... my bad
The Picker (3 years ago)
But What Do I Know: The small schools still playing have this in common, good players.

Old Titan: So in other words ORU can continue to lose to North Butte Tech without a soul caring much? So it's fine that ORU is the only program in basketball history that has no expectations? If nothing matters, why play?

SBH, It did look like that ESPN puppet was going to chest-bump Tiger. It is indeed a shame that ESPN has no competition. Those nerds actually think they're popular. It's the games we like, not those schmucks. Jay Bilas, Dugout Phelps, they're all horrendous.

Glenn 616, OU women hoops, wow, man, you're right, how could we have forgotten something so exciting. Losing to Uconn by 50, can't wait. The truth of it is that OU rode that one great player, Dales, almost to the top, and hasn't been a serious contender since. You seen the size of that business they play with, the Nerf ball, it's about as big as a softball, who couldn't shoot 80 percent with that. I thought you were going to mention OU softball (which just lost to TU!)

Old Titan (3 years ago)
How can it be said there are "no expectations" at a school with "EXPECT A MIRACLE" painted on the court?? You and I have been through this exact argument last fall - remember much? 1. Play anyone/anywhere/any time in the non-conference schedule, 2. Win the conference championship, 3. Win NCAA tournament games. 4. Represent the school well in the process. HOW CAN THE EXPECTATIONS BE ANY MORE SIMPLE? HOW CAN YOU NOT GET THAT? Riddle me this: when was the last time you actually set foot in the Mabee Center for an ORU game? I'll bet the players were all wearing "short shorts" and Curt Gowdy was calling the game. With that in mind, how are your "observations" any different than those of the other blogging wannabes sitting in their underwear at their computers, railing at a world that's passed them by? When you're actually ready one day to experience that which you so carelessly dismiss, just let me know - I've got four tickets and a great view of the cheerleaders waiting for you at the next game. Or does the view from the ivory tower suffice?
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Ugh, sorry about the ribbing, Ken. Hope you feel better.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Titan, you don't have to play anybody anytime, anywhere, all you have to do is win the tournament of one of the worst conferences in the history of balls, then win a tournament game. ORU used to have a national presence. Anymore, it's known in south Tulsa, period. A miracle today would be an 80 percent crowd.
buster (3 years ago)
I would love to see The Picker get a job on ESPN, he could make his predictions and comments on TV wearing a paper bag over his head. Picker, please take your 2 straight men with you, Ken"meds"7 and Mexi"grammersmack"Mike with you.
Ken7, I call mine medicine too.
