Billy's Big Mistake
Published: 8/27/2009 2:39 PM

Billy Gillispie had such a good reputation as both a coach and recruiter in the southwest that it was likely he was going to quickly return to this region as a head coach.
Maybe not now.
Gillispie, a Bill Self assistant at the University of Tulsa when the Golden Hurricane reached the Elite Eight, is in big trouble after being picked up on suspicion of driving under the influence.
He was fired earlier this year as head coach at Kentucky.
This latest incident, linked with other similar charges in the past, probably kills his chances at a speedy return to head coaching.
Any school interested in Gillispie, who made a great reputation for recruiting and coaching as head coach at UTEP and Texas A&M, will now have to look awfully hard at his off-the-court record.
Gillispie has made it doubly difficult on any school that would like to hire him.
That would include some natural places like Tulsa, which could be looking for a coach if TU wins Conference USA and wins a game or two in the NCAA Tournament.

You didn't mention that he had some 'traffic' problems while he was on Bill Self's staff. Swept under the rug?
