Biscuits With the Brits

All eyes are on England for some while, starting with the British Open this weekend, running through the Olympics.

The British Open is some weird tournament. It is for the most part golf without trees. In America, golf without trees is called a federal disaster area. Golf without trees is like baseball without fences, football without sidelines.

At the British open, the premium is on hitting straight grounders.

They're called links courses because spectators get so bored with all the low liners, and so chilled in the weather, they must eat hot links to stay conscious.

The great thing about the British Open is the weather, wind that can bend a puttter, rain that sails sideways. And the rough this year is supposed to be knee high to a palace guard. What's better that seeing spoiled athletes look like municipal course players.

The British Open comes on the tube at around 5 a.m. And no, Gene, Tiger isn't winning.

As for the Olympics, we'll be working on a six-hour time difference, that's central time. So expect the competitive networks to blab results galore in hopes of spoiling the parties to come later.

Mr. Picker, two items. First, the event to which you make reference is "The Open". When you feel the need to add "British" you display a lack of appreciation for the history of the sport.
Second, Tiger is paired with Sergio for the first two rounds and that is his incentive to do well. Tiger will be in the final group on Sunday. If you're looking for a fun read, pick up Haney's book on his 6 years with Tiger. Haney is an alum of the University of Tulsa who has done very well.

I didn't know that about the hot links.
I'll try that if forced to watch this thing called golf on TV.

Um, you do realize they INVENTED the game of golf, right? Links golf is the original form. What's your next blog post, complaining about the pasta in Italy?

1) The Sun will Shine Brightly on Merry 'Ole England this weekend.
2) Tiger will be in the final grouping on Sunday.
3) Brazil will win the Gold in Basketball.
4) Cleveland will win the Super Bowl.
5) None of the above.

Gene, I expect Tiger to do well in this tournament. Not sure if he'll win, but, he will compete.

Glenn, thanks for your support. I think I'll offer Mr. Picker a small wager with Tiger against the field. What do you think?

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
