Bomar, Quinn not going quietly

SAN ANTONIO -- Oklahoma left Big 12 football media days 24 hours ago. The stench of the Rhett Bomar-J.D. Quinn-Big Red Sports & Imports fiasco, however, lingers.
Because of the Sooners' improprieties, and those committed by Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, reporters are scurrying around asking players from every school about staying clean.
Coaches, meanwhile, say things that unintentionally whisk minds back to OU's NCAA pickle.
Consider Mike Leach's opening comments Tuesday: "I think when you can tell a lot about your team is in the offseason, and they don't let you have too much contact with them. You're not allowed to have a lot of meetings or coach them, yet you're still ridiculously in charge of their behavior."
Think Bob Stoops gets where his old offensive coordinator is coming from? And how must have Stoops reacted to the news that Quinn had been arrested for DUI in Montana?
That bulletin got a few tables of media buzzing here in San Antonio. So did Malcolm Kelly's candid assessment of Bomar's quarterbacking Monday -- "People can say whatever they want to about him, but the boy can play."
Unfortunately, the boy made a terrible mistake in judgment. And the Sooners, one year after Bomar's departure from OU and one day after their departure from media days, continue to pay a price.
As Terry Douglass of the Grand Island (Neb.) Independent wrote, "The improprieties that came to light prior to last season and eventually caused the Sooners to vacate their victories in 2005 seemingly will truly come back to haunt coach Bob Stoops' squad. If Oklahoma only had a proven quarterback Rhett Bomar comes to mind it could've been a very special season in Norman."
