We here at the Picks have said that there could be no better job than coaching a sport at the University of Oklahoma.

Why?

Through the eyes of an adoring media, you can do little wrong.

Bad year? Bad luck! Lose a few? Injuries! Beat some bums? They weren't that until we got 'em! Probation? No big deal.

The glory days can be more important than the recent days.

Media people are on the payrolls of the teams they cover.

So what's wrong with playing favorites?

Lots.

First off, being a predictable cheerleader deprives the viewers and readers of the media person's best efforts. Little can be learned if all you watch or read reflects what you already think.

What follows is from USA Today, today, Tuesday, Sept. 28.

On a telephone press conference, Texas coach Mack Brown did his usual bit about how his team needed to play much better than it did against UCLA. When he was asked about strategy for this week's OU game, Brown wouldn't take the bait.

"I bet we've got some Oklahoma reporters on here," he said. "And one thing I know about Oklahoma reporters is, they like their team."

Bingo.

Right on Picker! Objective reporting from the media just isn't there. It's what the media likes or wants a team to be. Useless to readers and viewers alike. Then we wonder why a team doesn't play as well or is better than thought.

I couldn't agree with you more. Homerism is boring, since you know what they're gonna say before you read or tune in.

It's not just an Oklahoma thing... I mean... Have you READ Kirk Bohls?!

Three words: Gibbs. Schnellenberger. Blake.

"Journalism" is no more, what with TV (moving pictures required with voice over description, not talking heads), the internet (blather, blather) and print media pert near gone. I remember reading Bill Connors, Dick Young, Shirley Povich, et al eons ago and ralizing that the "great ones" rarely knew anything about the actual sports they were covering relying instead on yelping their own biases and prejudices and reducing team sports and games to wild personality sketches. Every single one of them butt kissed owners, head coaches, etc because that kept alive their avenue to locker rooms, airplane rides, hotel rooms and meals. Freeloaders, in general. Modern day "homers" are sort of like Fox 'News", identifying a market, i.e. "OU Fans, etc." then telling them what they want to hear.

Woof! Junie's tied for third place! Go doggies! Bow wow! Go Philadelphia! Go beagles!

National media types and media types from other markets all believe Oklahoma may have the biggest homer media when it comes to OU, that's a fact. Don't try to compare OK media to anyone anywhere else.

Adman, you're exactly right, the cheerleading media around here, it's pretty much a national laugh.

Junie, careful with the bragging, football is a little tougher than your tennis.

The state's largest newspaper (which is tied to your newspaper and several radio and television stations) is owned by the Gaylord Family, who just happen to have a football stadium in Norman named after them.

Conflict of interest much?

Fan918, and the great points just keep arriving.

(On a personal level, we wouldn't read that other thing except on a bet.)

Good call, Picker. Do we want objective reporting or do we want our media to serve as an organ for hyping our favorite teams? Once started, that's a slippery slope.

As a fan, I would hope for a little bit of honesty in reporting. But I admit I do enjoy hearing the positives rather than a constant harping on how the college kids in the secondary are so slow they can't catch a parked car.

sorry for the duplicate post... server issues.

The problem is that the media and the "other" paper know what sells and who is going to buy it. As an OSU fan, I too get a little frustrated with the media and its OU homerism at times. But at the end of the day, it's a business and they have to pander to those read, listen, and watch the most. In this state, those happen to be OU fans.

Junie loves to participate!

Pick:
The World's Hoover liked the Sooners so much that he picked Cincy to beat OU last week. Just a week ago, the Oklahoman's Berry Tramel, again, picked Texas to be OU. Gotta believe that other area writers will pick Texas as well.

OSU? LOL
