Boone Pickens to Mike Gundy: You got what you wanted. Now you better win more than seven games

Our friends at The Oklahoman had a very enlightening Q&A with Oklahoma State super booster Boone Pickens on Thursday when the oilman was honored with the unveiling of his portrait at the Oklahoma State Capitol.

(You can read Berry Tramel's full blog here).

Pickens' comments provided a great game of reading between the lines.

The takeaway: Pickens loves his men's basketball coach. His football coach, well maybe not quite as much.

Pickens' money quote was on Mike Gundy's hiring of new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich from an obscure Division II school in the northeast.

"Little bit surprised," Pickens said. "There are a lot of people I don't know. I don't know him. I know there are a lot of people I don't know that are very good. I hope he's one of 'em.

"We've got some players. We'll have a good football team this year. I was disappointed last year in 7-5. I thought it should have been 9-3. So we'll see what happens this year."

We've talked a lot since December about the tug-of-war between OSU athletic director Mike Holder and Gundy. I said the decision to hire Yurcich seemed to indicate Gundy got some of the autonomy he sought in his flirtations with Tennessee and Arkansas.

(You can read that blog here).

If you read between the lines, Pickens' comments to the Oklahoman indicate my guess was correct.

Pickens was "disappointed" with last year's football record, but is a "disciple" of basketball coach Travis Ford.

Ford has the "right attitude." For Gundy, "we'll see what happens this year."

Maybe I'm reading too much into it. But if Pickens is the type of person to send a message with his words, consider it sent.

Mike Gundy can have all the power he wants, but if he keeps winning seven games every year, he won't have it for long.

Gundy has done a heckuva lot more than Ford has. Don't understand Pickens' man love for Travis. He must have signed off on that 10 year contract.
