Brandon Weeden: A case study

It will be interesting to see where Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden is selected in this week's NFL Draft.

Weeden's value fluctuates wildly depending on who you listen to -- some project the Cowboys star as a late first-round pick while a small contingent of draft studiers see him slipping into the third day.

Jason Collington, our Online Editor who is also a key contributor to the Fantasy World blog, is very high on Weeden. Check out Collington's take here.

John McClain, who covers the NFL for the Houston Chronicle, is hearing that Cleveland would love to take Weeden with its first pick of the second round (Read more from McClain on the NFL Draft here. McClain projects Justin Blackmon to St. Louis with the sixth pick of the first round, by the way).

Since the beginning of the Weeden-NFL debate, the OSU star has always struck me as someone whose college positives would be negatives from a draft perspective.

1. Age: Weeden began bristling at the age questions toward the end of the college season, but he has to understand this is an important part of his resume. Past his age as a number, another question NFL scouts must answer is how much of Weeden's college success came from possessing a maturity level beyond his teammates or opponents.

2. Weeden to Blackmon: Was there a dominant member of this combination? Did Weeden turn Blackmon into a potential top 10 pick or did Blackmon turn Weeden into one of the best quarterbacks in OSU history? If you think Blackmon was the real star of this tandem, then that drops Weeden down the board.

3. The offense: While the Mike Leach-Dana Holgorsen offense is good at producing huge numbers, it hasn't been good at producing NFL quarterbacks. Weeden has the advantage of spending one year with Todd Monken, a former NFL assistant. But there will still be a transition period. Weeden's debut in a pro style offense during January's Senior Bowl produced a 5-for-9 performance for 56 yards and two interceptions.

No matter what happens for Weeden in this week's draft, it's only the beginning. His development, longevity and level of success may set the evaluation standard for older quarterbacks entering the NFL for years go to come.
