Bring Back Switzer (For the Texas Game)!
Published: 9/27/2010 12:07 PM
Last Modified: 9/27/2010 12:10 PM

Just when it looked like the long regional nightmare was over -- the Texas domination of OU -- along comes the following:

The OU defensive secondary couldn't cover a pot of beans.

UCLA humiliates Texas.

Stoops suggests Texas is just another game.

Until all that transpired, the pick was OU by double figures.

Now, who knows.

How could anybody in his right mind even think about picking Texas?

Its quarterback had a good half against Alabama, there's one reason. It just won at Tech, there's another reason. Mack going to a running game without runners was a major blunder. After looking at OU's hapless cornerbacks, surely he'll throw 75 times Saturday.

It's simple why OU and Texas don't run so well against quality foes: immobile quarterbacks. If the quarterback is not a running threat out of the spread, you're losing a big part of the offense.

Surely, Stoops is pretending that the Texas game is not the biggest of the year. Where does he think OU recruits, Wisconsin? It has to be a psychological ploy. After all, he played the Texas fight song last week, prior to stinking it up against a lousy Cincy team. People from Ohio have TV's, don't they? They had to have watched OU-Texas growing up. Surely right before the game Stoops will say that that winning a watered down conference title is a bunch of bull without beating Texas.

He should tell Switzer the Texas encounter isn't THE game, see how that goes.

The point spread is OU by 3 and a half.

The pick is up in the air.

Why is the pick up in the air?

SOONERS by 21.

Im sure Stoops and Mack are really glad the Pick is around to help run those two crappy programs: what to say, what scheme to run, who to schedule, what they should think is important...Gets to sound really stupid when you consider that both programs win more than their share, even without the divine wisdom of the Picker.

Check their salaries.

OU -4 in Costa Rica

Costa Rica. Sounds safe.

Switzer was 9-5-2 against Texas, including the one he was cheated out of by the zebra. Ten-four-two.

That's how important he thinks the Texas game is.

Could somebody translate that into English for me?

Never mind. Got it.

I'm sorry, what?! Pick, you constantly bash teams for using a mobile QB to run the ball. Now all of a sudden you're criticizing teams because they don't have one? Wow.

Now we see why Texas didn't like the proposal to join the Pac-10. Brilliant move . . . stay where they are and dominate the BIG Xii. Give me Texas and the points.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Gene-O, should I go ahead and order the first course in our nine-course Ryder Cup fancy food wager involving at least one gentleman?
Squarko (2 years ago)
Stoops was pretending. Anyone who coaches at OO (in any sport)knows that their record against Texas will be a big part of their legacy. Both Mack & Bob got caught looking ahead.

Look at UCLA's upcoming schedule... I'd wager that they will maybe win only two more games the rest of this year.

I have a solution for the kicking game, someone pointed this out Saturday.

With 5-6 minutes to go we missed a FG. What was brought to my attention was that OU's kicker was not wearing a cup.

It was plain to see he missed the kick to the right while his center of gravity was off to the left. The kicker just needs to align his center of gravity.

Mr. Picker, I was going to suggest that you put the $$$$ in a bag and leave it in Linihan's office for me. Make it easy on your own self, why don't you?
Wonder what the book in England was doing; making Tiger an "underdog."

If Stoops loves winning watered down conference championships so much, then why doesn't he stress winning BCS bowl championships?
Arbythree (2 years ago)
Stoops stressing winning BCS Championships would be as Cocky as the Picker saying he will be us at at Out Pick The Picker.

Stoops is a little more modest.
Squarko (2 years ago)
In all fairness Mr. Picker, every time I hear him talk about it he refers to Championships. Not specifically Big 12 or BCs. Just Championships

Is there anybody out there who doesn't love or hate OU, who has an objective eye on this game?

Texas would appear to stink a little.

But it did win easily at Lubbock, in coach Tupperware's first big game. And being humiliated by UCLA has to give it something of an emotional edge.

ESPN's college recruiting page lists twelve of eighteen verbal commits coming to OU from Texas.

Wow. That losing streak against Texas has really turned the Red River into a moat. How will they ever get Texas players to come north again?

Unicorn territory.

OU looked ahead and squeaked by a terrible team (Cincy is horrible). Texas got caught looking ahead to this game by a team that will finish 4th in the PAC-10 (behind Oregon, Stanford, and Arizona).

Picker...I got your reference of immobile QB's hurt the spread offense. TU has struggled with consistency at RB the past 2 seasons yet seems to manage to keep the opposing defenses on their toes because Kinne is somewhat mobile. Add in that his accuracy has improved this year and that has now opened up running lanes for the RB's because LB's have to hang back and make sure of where the ball is. With Jones and Gilbert not running threats, LBs can key in on RB's with the hand off and play actions. Making it tougher to run inside (OU fans, don't start clamoring over DeMarco Murray...he piled up yards against terrible defenses. No one in MWC plays defense, Cincy terrible, Utah State....whatever, and Florida State (can we say underwhelming talent with a decent QB).

Toss a coin, whoever has the ball last this weekend wins.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Wow, ESPN says it, just like ESPN said Florida State would upset OU.

Pretty amazing stuff ESPN puts out, I'd believe it all.

IS ANYBODY OBJECTIVE? What is worse, the Texas offense or the OU defense?

The least worst wins.
Loki (2 years ago)
Florida v Miami (Ohio). Ole Miss v Jacksonville State. Nebraska v South Dakota State. Texas v UCLA.

Can an "inferior" opponent jump up and bite the big boys on the assets? Parity nee Parody.

Are college kids inconsistent in focus and motivation?

Is it risky to infer big lessons from isolated events?

If either team needs an external "emotional edge" for this game, something must be wrong.
justanotherokie (2 years ago)
Loki,
"Are college kids inconsistent in focus and motivation?"

We need to grow up like USC hand hire some pros.
Loki (2 years ago)
Reporting verbal commitments is not an exercise in opinion. Perhaps ESPN could mess that up, but it was in service of a larger point.

Would you prefer a list of actual Texas players added to the roster the past five years? Would that suffice to put a wooden stake in the recruiting shibboleth?
jimmyd (2 years ago)
I believe this is now a "look ahead" spot for OU. You look ahead to the major competition. This now appears to be OSU and Bedlam.
J T from Jenks (2 years ago)
Pick, can't beleive you think Cincy is lousy team. The running back that gave OU problems played a part of of Fresno game. Then he's out. He came back to play OU. The scouting report on him was limited. Take him out of the game and Cincy is a totaly different team.the QB limited without the run game, your team could maybe sack the QB several times. My study says there is something really wrong with the preparation process. You play like you pratice. Therefore if the mistakes in the game are being made in pratice, are the coaches correcting them? It seems they are because the coaches give the appearence of being ready to play. I say the team is not mentaly ready.
