Building a Tougher OU Defense

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops saw enough of his defense this spring to know it is moving in the right direction.
I think they understand much more clear on what we want them to do,” said Stoops. “I saw them continually improve this spring.”
Oklahoma’s defense has been a hot topic all spring.
Mike Stoops was lured back to OU, after he was fired as Arizona’s coach, to be OU’s defensive coordinator.
Former OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables took off to become defensive coordinator at Clemson.
Most believe there won’t be any radical changes. Stoops and Venables used to share defensive coordinator duties before Stoops got the head coaching job at Arizona.
Bob Stoops admitted, “We’ve got a long way to go” on defense but liked what he saw in the spring.
Mike Stoops believes progress was made.
“It has been an amazing couple of months since I got back here,” said Mike Stoops. “It has all happened so fast.
“But, I’m happy how fast the guys have picked up things. I think things are starting to show.”
OU defenders spent much of the spring “just going over fundamentals”.
Mike Stoops the specific packages OU will use in the fall will be worked out over the next five months.
“The schematics of the thing will come as we get ready for the season,” said Mike Stoops.
Rebuilding that toughness that OU defenders were known for when Stoops was co-defensive coordinator “was part of building our identity.”
