C-USA Tiebreaker Mirrors Big 12
Published: 12/1/2008 2:41 PM

Conference USA has basically the same tiebreaker system as the Big 12 in determining who gets spots in the conference football championship game.
Luckily, for Tulsa, the Golden Hurricane was in a two-way tie. The answer is simple. Who won? Tulsa beat Rice. Tulsa goes.
However, had it been a three-way tie, it would have gone to the BCS numbers just like the Big 12.
OU won that battle, just barely, to get the Big 12 slot above Texas.
Tulsa would have won a similar battle against Houston and Rice.
However, TU coach Todd Graham said he wasn't sure of what tiebreaker system was in place "But our folks had looked at it just in case it happened."
And, TU athletic director Bubba Cunningham said the homework had been done and the Golden Hurricane knew what would happen.
However, all agreed the tiebreaker system will be up for some review and modification this spring and summer.
We're guessing that will happen in the Big 12, too.

Perhaps C-USA should modify its tiebreaker system. If it wants to.

But there's no reason that the Big 12 should. The Big 12's system ensures that the team with the best chance of playing for the national championship advances to the conference championship game.

That's a good thing, not something to change.
