Cam Newton's PR Problem
Published: 11/5/2010 11:14 AM

Regardless of the guilt or innocence of Cam Newton in a brewing scandal, there is little doubt it could have an impact on his Heisman chances.
Newton, Auburn's fabulous quarterback, is the runaway leader in the Heisman race. Well, he was until Thursday when ESPN.com reported an agent claimed he had been soliciting six-figure deals from colleges to land Newton.
Auburn and Newton's family are isssuing flat out denials.
That may or may not be enough.
Because of Reggie Bush, and how his investigation played out, there will be some reluctance by some Heisman voters to put down Newton's name.
The last thing the Heisman folks want to do is reclaim another Heisman Trophy two or three years down the road.
I figured Newton is still the favorite, as long as he keeps playing at the same high level. But, if he falters, it may open the door for another player because voters may be looking for a safer option.

Auburn is put in the position where they have to decide whether they go forward without Cam Newton, or use him and run the risk of later having to forfeit the victories...It comes down to do you believe the agent's allegations, or do you believe the athletes denials....Remember Reggie Bush denied it all the way up until the sanctions were released.

This is happening at OU, OSU, and all over the country at the top 20 schools, lets not kid ourselves here. Newton's IRS problem as well.

I have a hard time believing the Heisman Trust voters will take the chance of having to vacate another winner so soon after the Bush affair. Unless the allegations are disproven without any question in the near future, the Heisman voters would be very reluctant to vote for Newton.

If they bench him now and it is proven to be true, they have to forfeit their first 9 games and have no shot at even a bowl game, much less the BCS title. They might as well keep playing him and let the investigation go its course. If he's guilty, they also forfeit the rest of their games and are in the same place they would have been if they benched him now; no bowl game, no BCS title game. But if they bench him now and he's innocent then they have jeopordized everything for what turned out to be no reason at all.
