Can Soccer or the NBA Be Saved?
Published: 7/23/2007 5:54 PM
Last Modified: 7/23/2007 5:54 PM

Can David Beckham save soccer in this country? Save it from what, a pee wee baseball team wanting the field? Only the addition of two more goals on the sides of the pitch could introduce big-time soccer, the problems being, nil, null and void, which describes the offensive end of the sport.
Moving on from a game of footsie to a possible con game: If it is true that an NBA official rigged games to pay for a gambling habit, the entire sport should be suspended a year and run through a car wash. Not to sound jealous over our neighbor down the turnpike or anything, but: Hey Oklahoma City, pro basketball could be pro wrestling, you going to build a new palace for that junk?
Moving on from a cold sport to a hot sport: The long-range weather prediction for the PGA championship at Southern Hills in Tulsa is for increasing heat. Not that a local meteorologist has been able to hit a rain puddle with a putter this summer. There could be a 50-degree temperature swing from one major to the next. Any reason to give Euro mosquito Sergio Garcia the benefit of the doubt was lost when he suggested that other-worldly forces conspired against him. Well, he should know, he dresses like he's from out there. While on the subject of Euro golfers: If they love Europe so much, why do most of them go to college in this great country?
Moving on from a gold mine to a waste of time, energy and money: they should do away with football conference media days. When asked what his favorite part of meeting with the media was, Stoops said, on the Sports Blitz Sunday night, the trip home was his favorite part. Charming. Maybe another raise would help him through the day of questions from mostly adoring writers and broadcasters.

Micheal Vick...the NBA scandal...isn't professional sports great??

Concerning the PGA, I might have my choice on which day (or maybe days) to attend. At first I was thinking final round, but maybe Saturday would be best. This way, I can watch the fianl round on the tube and actually keep up with all the holes.

I wasn't a big NBA fan (to say the least) BEFORE this scandal. I think this will do some harm to a sport that is clearly a collection of superstars that think team has an "i" in the spelling. I just hope it doesn't keep OKC from getting the Sonics...which would make this state an actual player in the professional scene. I mean, outside of golf (which I like), this state has no worldwide sporting interest. And, we all know the chances of an NFL team ever coming to OK.

Stoops isn't paid to kiss the rear ends of the media...but I will agree that he needs to work on his relations with them. Late in the season after several post game conferences might be an excuse for being cold...but before fall camp?? I guess the NCAA stuff has him on edge. The raises EARNED by the coaches shouldn't reflect mistakes players make. Stoops did a great job last year winning the Big 12 with all that happened. He set the bar too high when he won it all in year two...so he had no way to go but down...

Stoops EARNED his raise just like Peterson EARNED his Lexus two month test drive!!

I hate to publicly admit that I was one of the morons who watched the LA v Chelsea game on Saturday. Those are some of the most talented athletes in the world playing one of the worst spectator sports ever, only second to the WNBA! It was so boring to watch that, if it weren't for the frequent cutaways to Eva, it would've been unbearable!!
Jeremy (6 years ago)
Well, soccer is an aquired taste in my opinion. It's a lot like boxing...styles make fights. I agree that the LA v. Chelsea match was not the most thrilling thing to watch. Having grown up playing soccer (in HS, in premier leagues, etc.), I love the sport. Thankfully, I also played baseball. Anyway, to the eye that completely understands soccer, it's not a bad sport to watch. If the game is played by two teams that actually want to score (not settle for a draw, etc.), than it can be very exciting.

I know, I know...soccer in America is not what it is over seas, and it never will be. I'd say that I can watch about 2/3 of the soccer games that are on the tube...and I love the sport! What does that say about the many Americans that have little to no playing experience? By contrast, I never played a down of football in HS, but can watch 100% of the college or pro games that hit the tube.

Soccer doesn't cater to the fast food mentality of Americans who watch TV. Soccer is one of Man Kind's oldest sports, and the rules are not adapted for TV...TV adapts for the sport by not showing commercials during the match. Its no surprise Americans don't understand the nuances of Soccer's dynamics. Just think how competitive USA would be in Soccer if athletes like Barry Sanders, Thurman Thomas, Michael Jordan all grew up playing soccer? Soccer no doubt is the most popular sport on earth. Americans no doubt lack attention spans needed to focus on a sport longer than the time between commercial breaks.

Jeremy: The best day to go to the PGA is probably Thursday. There will be more first-aid ice then, for sure, better medical attention. You can't see much no matter when you go; why not go HD when the tournament is on the line.

Hope: Good point about the two-month test drive. Man needs to see how the ride is going to handle in several climate changes. But don't you think the fans have earned a better humor from the coach?

J. Lance: Yeah, my favorite soccer moment was when what's her name yanked off her jersey.

Yoda: I'll grant you, it's the average American's fault for preferring action over subtlty. But guess what, that's what we're talking about, soccer in America. Not soccer in Manchester. The game will have to change before the American fans will want to change. It's the same thing that drove ice hockey to the Grocery Channel, not enough scoring.

Thank you Mr. Picker. What I find funny is the sooner nation wants to get on here and cry about how bad they've been treated, but not one of them wants to explain how Peterson kept the car for a two month test drive.I'm amazed that everyone bought the total LIE that two month test drives are the norm. Then again the sooner nation is led by lying, cheating, whining, David Boren.

Hope, only an idiot would not want to see Peterson and the Sooners hung out to dry if he also broke the rules with his Lexus. Question is, with the obvious disdain in which the NCAA holds that school in Norman, why haven't they hammered them for it? And when the toothless NCAA finally gets around to spanking USC's hand over the Bush affair (don't hold your collective breath...), then the Sooner bashers can come down on OU as hard as they'd like. Picker, gratifying comment about the punk NBA and the carwash...are you getting back to your old tongue-in-cheek form? About Soccer in the USA...a local sports writer here in St Louis, Brian Burwell, recently wrote an article pointing out that if bringing Pele, Cruyff, and Beckenbauer to the US on their walkers in the seventies didn't jump-start the sport, then why would Beckham be able to do so in 2007? Couple of problems with his thesis...bringing those aging stars over thirty-odd years ago DID jump start the sport...compare youth participation (and even college popularity now) in that sport to its virtually non-existant status in the nineteen sixties. And please, please, baseball fans...don't have the audacity to accuse a beautiful, artful, game like Soccer of being boring when you sit around drinking beer, eating hotdogs, and listening to some boozy ex-player broadcasting...'ball two'.....'he's stepping off the mound'...'wait, here he comes...his catcher is signaling...he's stepping back off of the mound'...'ball three'...ad nauseum. And all under the wonderful cloud of steroid enhanced performance. Please. Oh, and about the PGA....um...you can have it.

I didn't know telling it like is about Peterson and OU depended on what the NCAA did to USC. OU cheated, got caught, got off way to easy, compared to the 80's and early 90s. I never mentioned USC on any of my blogs. This is not about USC.

Soccer is very exciting - - #2 kicks it to #4 who kicks it to #5 who kicks it to #8, now the other team has stolen the ball and #9 kicks it to #12 who kicks it to #10 . . . . . . . . . .
Jimbo (6 years ago)
Why are there so many riots at Soccer matches? Because the game is so boring, the fans go crazy for some action.

Baseball was my favorite sport to play while in HS. Soccer was a close second. I will agree with WG, though, that baseball as a spectator sport on TV can be just as boring as soccer. Plus...a baseball game can last over 3 hours! At least the soccer game is over in 2 hours. I can't watch baseball on TV unless it's the fall classic or the playoffs. Now, if a great game is coming down to the wire or a pitcher is looking at a possible no-hitter, I can tune in. For those who COMPLETELY understand soccer, watching it on TV isn't that bad...but it isn't that good...like hockey, or baseball in my opinion.

Football trumps all things sports for TV in my opinion...with college hoops right up there. The NBA stinks for me. I like golf on the weekend (final two rounds)...and I love a good horse race on the tube.

Hope...you are obviously not a Sooner backer...so I'll assume that you are in love with OSU, UT, or TU. Regardless...why keep pounding the fact the OU has been in trouble with the NCAA?? Guess what...so have MANY schools, including OSU. In fact, OSU received sanctions that were darn near equal to OU's in the 90's. Do you think that OSU, UT, or any other big time institution doesn't cross the line to some extent? Maybe it's only players that mess up...maybe it's coaches...maybe it's boosters...maybe it's small, and maybe it's large. But don't be naive. OU gets a bad wrap because (1) IT'S A WINNER (OSU doesn't have this problem...the nation doesn't care if they cheat or not), and (2) Charles Thompson appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated, further infuriating OU and Switzer haters.

Don't get me wrong Hope...if any school, including OU, breaks the rules, then they should be punished. But don't give me this crap about OU fans whining. If YOUR favorite school was sanctioned, you'd have something to say too.

Hope (6 years ago)
Jeremy, for your info I graduated from OU in 1983. I don't know where your aggie bit came from.I never mentioned those cow herders in my blog. I'm just tired of these football coaches and so-called fans embarrassing my school. Where did you graduate from?

Jimbo: Actually, I think number 5 headed it to number 8. Didn't kick it. Then number 3 faked an injury to his neck. Please try to get your facts straight.

The Iraqi's found a way to make soccer exciting for the fans: dodging bullets and car bombs. They must have read this blog.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
Picker...your comment brings up the one thing that I can't stand about soccer and it players. The rolling around in agony, only to get up and walk off the field, and then return as soon as the referee will motion the player back in is stupid. Is soccer rough? Plenty. For physical contact and needed fitness, soccer is way up there. But the constant acting is absolutely stupid. This is why referees issue cards for fake diving. It needs to go to the next level...where league officials review game tapes and fine/suspend any player going after an Oscar.

Hope...Pitt St. University. But, I'm a life long Sooner fan and proud of it. I do root for all state schools though...and hope OSU goes 11-1 every year (with the loss to OU of course).

Iraq jokes are difficult.

Even when Letterman does Bin Laden fake clips, a person wonders what those who lost somebody in the war must think.

It is true, Yoda, we are read in Iraq.

Soldier at the Baghdad airport checks in all the time.
