I see where John Holcomb and the gang at Newson6.com is asking fans to name their favorite Bedlam moment, regardless of sport, of all time. They'll tally the votes and unveil the top 10 on Sunday's Sports Blitz.
Not that I was asked, but here are my fave five, in chronological order…
Nov. 25, 2001: OSU 16, OU 13 at Owen Field
It's the only time I've ever spent more than a minute in the visitors' locker room after a game. I waited for quarterback Josh Fields to finish interviews and followed him into a makeshift trainer's room. As a staffer began unwrapping tape, Fields looked like he might fall asleep. He'd just thrown one of the most important passes in Cowboy history, and you'd swear it was as big a deal as tossing a wad of that tape in the trash can.
Nov. 1, 2003: OU 52, OSU 9 at Owen Field
Mike Stoops' farewell gift to the Sooners. Legend has it that the OU defensive coordinator teared up while addressing his players the night before, a product of how distraught he remained over the Pokes' 38-point onslaught the year before in Stillwater. Tommie Harris, his head freshly shaved, could barely contain himself in pregame. When play actually began, he and the rest of Stoops' defenders unleashed a fury for the Bedlam ages.
March 5, 2008: OU 68, OSU 56 at Gallagher-Iba Arena
Caught up in a Blake Griffin-less upset of the Cowboys, Sooner coach Jeff Capel ignored ESPN's cameras and unfurled one of the two or three best quotes in Bedlam history: "Let's hurry up and get a shower and get the hell out of this hellhole."
Nov. 30, 2008: OU 61, OSU 41 at Boone Pickens Stadium
The coolest-looking Bedlam play I've seen live: Sam Bradford scrambled from Patrick Lavine, soared over Ricky Price, and got spun helmet over cleats thanks to a midair hit from Orie Lemon. As a bonus, the game was nearly as fun as the play.
March 12, 2009: OSU 71, OU 70 at the Ford Center
If you're gonna have a Big 12 tournament in Oklahoma City, it should be mandatory you stick Bedlam in there somewhere because of this nerves-shredder. As dramatic as this one was on the court, it barely matched the intensity in the divided stands. Easily the most electric Bedlam environment I have encountered.
