Cardinal sins

This was my wife's idea: On our honeymoon, we went to a St Louis Cardinals game.
All sports writers were little bitty fans before they ever became poorly dressed sports writers and it was an NFL team that sparked my passion for sports. I never, ever had an allegiance with a Major League Baseball team, although I did think it was cool when former Oklahoman Willie Stargell led the "We Are Family" Pirates back from a big deficit against the Orioles in the World Series.
I had favorite baseball players, but never favorite baseball teams. All of the favorite players were Oklahomans -- Johnny Ray, Robert Davis, Steve Crawford -- and those were just the Mayes County guys.
I went to Kansas City with my grandparents once to watch Davis play for the Blue Jays against the Royals. I remember going to the Crown Center and visiting a restaurant where you pick a fish out of an aquarium and they kill it for you on the spot and cook it -- or at least that's what I was told. It's no wonder that folks in Atlantis hate us surface-dwellers.
Back to the original subject, the wife is a big St. Louis Cardinals fan because she was raised in a state where baseball is part of the daily regimen. You sleep, eat and watch the Cardinals. Everything else is extraneous.
The Cardinals just reached the World Series. For the sake of household harmony, I wouldn't mind if they won.
