Changing Times for NASCAR, Petty

NASCAR seems to be making a lot of changes to a product that has been growing at a remarkable rate in the last 15 to 20 years.
But making changes is what NASCAR is all about.
Just one day after NASCAR talked about the Car of Tomorrow and changes in the point system, Lowe's Motor Speedway announced changes in the format for the Nextel Cup Challenge, the all-star race held in May in Charlotte.
Humpy Wheeler, who runs Lowe's Speedway, said it is all about keeping up with the times.
He doesn't mind the changes. Actually, he said he enjoys making changes and trying to keep what has been a good product fresh for fans.
Now, there will be four segments to the All-Star race held in Charlotte every May.
All of these changes don't sit well with some old fans. However, Richard Petty said he has no problem with it.
He told media on Tuesday that most of the fans who were around when he started running in the 1950s aren't around anymore.
So, it is up to NASCAR to make sure the fans of today get what they want.
Change isn't easy but most within NASCAR seem to accept all of the new rules and formulas.
Even Petty seemed to indicate nothing is forever when he suggested his traditional headquarters and shop, located in his hometown of Level Cross, N.C, may soon move to the Charlotte area.
Petty has always resisted going to Charlotte, where most NASCAR teams are headquartered. Now, he admits all of the technology and things needed to be competitive in NASCAR may force him 90 miles south to Charlotte.
Changes. That could be the theme for NASCAR the next few years.
