Cheer Up, Here's Some More Bread

At football, OU was waxed by arch-rival Texas, gave up about 100 points to a terrible Oregon team, lost a bowl game: Stoops gets another raise.

Assistants, too.

The womens' basketball team is the biggest disappointment in the national tournament, goes out early to something of an also-ran.

Coach Coale gets a gigantic raise!

The mens' basketball team barely finishes the season.

That coach gets a raise!

What a school!

But it's UT-Norman!

Forgot one.....OU has NCAA recruiting violations, AD Joe gets a raise!

Man, if somebody wins a big game anytime soon, call F. Knox.

So, what's your point, picker? That OU specifically and the people of Oklahoma in general have it out of perspective? That's been news since 1950 (President GL Cross stated that the OU comeback over Texas in '50 was what, in his opinion, started the over-interest in OU football). Or is your point that Castiglione, Stoops, et al are overpaid (making more together than the entire faculty combined)? That's not news either. Stoops and Castiglione get raises because of what the program does for the university and the state, and because they are good (perhaps not Jim Harris-Tommy McDonald good...or maybe not even Steve Davis-Joe Washington good), but there a darned site better than what they were for nine of the ten years in the 90s. And if you take a look at all major programs (that's right, I said ALL...), you'll notice that the same unbalanced virus is affecting them all. Michigan is in the midst of one of the most serious financial crises in the history of their program and what have they just done? Added another seven thousand seats to the stadium and installed a new jumbotron. I mean, you do have a point...but must you continue to make it week after week, ad nauseum?

Yeah, Stoops gettin righ while that massacres goin on in Africa, too. Just dont seem right, somehow.

Clearly posted to poke the bear… You are beating a dead horse picker. It seems obvious that you are inviting a debate for the whole ("stoops won last year in spite of...blah blah blah") stoops argument. I don’t need to make the argument because you know it (and probably cannot deny it).

Sadly, your bitterness toward OU (or your attempt to incite "spirited" posts rife with content that I can only believe is humorous for you) is becoming routine.

I'm pretty sure the Picker doesn't have it out for OU. Just a hunch. I think he's trying to rile up some yeah-hoos for being yeah-hoos. Same thing with the OKC radio guys. A couple of years back I was driving through OKC when I heard Esback and Blevins commenting on the Picker calling them "hamburgers." It was pretty funny. Their answer was that of a yeah-hoo.

And who is a better judge of yahoo-ism than TAB?
worldpicker (6 years ago)
The point is this: Shouldn't raises come after better years than what just transpired? The women's basketball coach gets a $250,000 raise for exactly what? You reward somebody for NCAA rules breaking? Losing the Fiesta Bowl did exactly what for this state? No wonder Stoops is testy. Getting paid so much; still can't stop the pass.

worldpicker (6 years ago)
Note to WG: The OU cheerleaders on the radio are always there for you. I don't make points week after week without reason. I make points when an AD gets a raise after rules violations. Any questions there, pal?

george (6 years ago)
Who cares? BOOMER SOONER!!!!
jorge (6 years ago)
I'll agree stoop's salary may a tad bit on the ridiculous side, but he has done an excellant job at OU and they did win the Big 12 title last year thanks to a classic Texas collapse. Saying such things as giving up a 100 points in a loss to Oregon looks like, to the comman reader such as myself as trying to get on the bad side of some sooner fans (me) when you and everyone else in the nation except for some disillusion Oregon fans know it was a botched game. As for Jeff Capel I think the Univerisity is trying to make for him having absolutely no talent in his first season. Thats all I can see.
worldpicker (6 years ago)
You make a darned good argument, George. And I'm certain educators agree: MORE MONEY FOR THE COACHES!

Jorge: But a simple question, my friend. Make it two. How can an OU football coach lose to Texas and lose the bowl game and get a raise? How can the program break rules in several categories, then give the AD a raise?

Are these questions too difficult?

Jess (6 years ago)
Your questions are to hard for these people.i doubt if any have ever attended a class here.Maybe if they could find their way to a class on campus and talk to some actual students, they would wonder, "Why is our university president worried about a dumb Oregon football game and not worried about getting more supplies for Chemistry lab????
Sis (6 years ago)
I have lived and listened to Sooners for years. I don't think OU could ever shock me.Over promoted, over rated, rude, poor sports, cheaters! With a win at all costs attitude. They don't even graduate their athletes. After OU sports, these poor guys and gals are not prepared for the "real" world of earning a living. This school doesn't encourage the philosophy of using an athletic scholarship to receive an education and better yourself. Few go to the pros and even fewer make it. Look at their used up quarterbacks, signing autographs for a buck! The entire university was the wrong attitude, from Boren to the interviewed players, with such poor grammar. A university that buys anyone who is a semi-semi-semi finalist on the National Merit test so that it will have any academic standing .......poor. Degree programs that are not related to the employment market......poor. A research program in trouble because it doesn't follow the rultes......poor. My point is the whole philosophy of the university is in great need of integrity, maybe that is what comes when the president is a politician. Play fair especially when the others don't, don't bad mouth the opponent, follow all the rules and punish those who don't in your system, and TAKE CARE OF THE STUDENTS!!! The University of Oklahoma is SCHOOL, act like it.
Don (6 years ago)
Hmmm! It looks like the picker forgot to mention that OU won the Big 12 in both Football and Women's basketball, the football team lost in OT on trick plays to the #5 team in the country (This by the way was not a vintage OU team, I for one was proud of the way they played last year after all the mess with the QB). At least if you are going to make arguments against the raises don't exaggerate, 34 points is along way from 100. It sounds like you are a little jealous!!!
TAB (6 years ago)
Who is that posing as TAB -- Sittler? LOL @ Davey-boy.
jorge (6 years ago)
Lets not forget it was two seperate individuals who broke the rules volunteraly without the knowledge of the univeristy. Once discovered stoops took immediate action and kicked his supposedily future superstar quarterback and his one of o-line where he already lacked depth. how many coaches do you think would do that? Also, If you think that kind of stuff doesnt happen anywhere else you are a little niave (reggie bush). Sure, we cant beat texas every year, sorry. loosing to boise state was down right embarassing, and stoops probably got out coached, but every other power house football program in the nation is giving their coaches a raise and boren wants to keep up. Also, who do you think is bringing all the money in? Answer: Football; thats why stoops got his raise worldpicker.
TAB (6 years ago)
Okay...who'se posing as TAB? This is getting silly. The other guy can't be me.
WG (6 years ago)
I stand by my comments. A dead horse is a dead horse, pal.
A Jones (6 years ago)
Sis…Your post is too lucid regarding the education of the students and the function of a university. Please remember that sports, particularly football, are paramount in Norman and anything that detracts from this is not acceptable. To bring up integrity is hitting below the belt. Please refrain from any non-positive comments about OU and particularly OU football.
WG (6 years ago)
Dear Sis...again, your criticism of the Sooners in all areas you tried so terribly hard to describe (and managed to do so with a modicum of misspellings, syntactical errors, and logical gaffs) would be compelling were it not for the obvious flaw: these problems exist on all campuses...yes, all campuses, from South Bend to Tuscaloosa to Austin and back home again to Stillwater. They've all got it out of perspective. They all graduate monosyllabic knuckle-draggers and they all graduate well-educated members of society. All campuses run the gamut from the well-educated product to the poor athlete who can't formulate a single sentence with any sort of acumen. A certain amount of responsibility also resides with the athlete himself (or herself). The opportunities exist once on campus to avail yourself of the benefits of actually being enrolled. So why not broaden your net a bit and describe the problem as being a systemic one...not one unique to one university. Or is being fair as difficult for you as typing a blog?
Jess (6 years ago)
I would bet all I have that WG has never entered an OU classroom, yet he speak for all of us that have!!
WG (6 years ago)
Jess...you'd be wrong. But it's been decades since I attended the institution.
S (6 years ago)
did Sis just blast someone for poor grammar? watch throwing them there stones...
