Cloudy Golloway

Did you see that?

Has anybody seen, in any sport, in any country, on any level, a worse coaching decision than the one OU's Cloudy Golloway dumped on a stunned viewing audience Thursday night at the College (ping) World (pong) Series of baseball?

Get this: OU, leading by one in extras, had two outs on South Carolina, a guy on second and first unoccupied, with one of the best hitters in college baseball coming to the dish. This fabulous SC hitter had a consecutive game hitting streak in the dozens. Who was on deck? Some guy who hadn't even batted in the Series!!!!!

The question was not will you walk the great hitter. It was how quickly will you walk him? Will you laugh while walking him?

Only Cloudy didn't walk him!!!!!

Don't ask why because there is no possible reason.

Base hit.

Rally.

OU loses.

This is the kind of coaching decision you see with the Mudville Nine.

You pitch to him because he was the winning run at the plate. End of story. Also, he was 0-5 for the night until that at bat. and if memory serves, he didn't look good in any of his bats prior to his last.

Pitch to one of the best hitters in college baseball instead of a scrub? In the first game with OU, this guy hit one into Iowa.

Winning run at the plate? THERE WERE TWO STINKING OUTS.

Nobody on earth except you and Cloudy would have pitched to that guy.

The Picker (3 years ago)
In an interview after the game, even the South Carolina hitter said he was surprised Cloudy didn't pitch around him!!!!!!!!!!!

Picker is dead on right on this Sooner Hawg. Looks like you probably would have lost the game too. Who cares if the guy is 0-5 in THAT game. He had a 20-something game hitting streak going! Can you say "he was due"!? He WAS due, hitting streak extended, game over, SC moves on. Too bad. I like Sunny but he muffed this one.

Didn't want to put the winning run on? End of story? Well, not quite. The story actually ended when the winning run scored. Funny how that works. A baseball manager makes one -- maybe two -- decisions a game that matter. Gallo blew it.

I agree with Picker and maximus on this. You're taking a chance of course, but you've gotta play the odds in a situation like this.

BTW, what/who is the Picker? This is the first time I've seen this feature on this site. I'm guessing a collaboration of all of the TW sports writers? Anyway, it looks like fun. I'll be watching for more stories about baseball.

You don't intentionally put the winning run (a base runner that can fly, by the way) on base.
dannysgirl (3 years ago)
If he's on base, he's not going to be the winning run unless the guy batting after him sends him home. Odds of that happening were less than the odds of this guy batting in the runner on second.

Glenn616 (3 years ago)
When you have just a man on second base and two outs, you should intentionally walk the guy, if he's a good hitter and the next guy isn't a good hitter. This way, you set up the force at both second and third. In addition, you have a better chance of getting the next guy out.

Picker, right on. Glad someone has the nads to mention that. You don't let the best player beat you with a base open and two out. Also sets up a force out anywhere on the infield. Also, feel free to play your OF at a depth to throw someones rear out at the plate with instead of their butts scraping the wall. Players played hard, poor game management cost them.

Listen idiot: you don't put the winning run on base. You just don't. Thanks for your moronic baseball input. Now go back to writing about something you actually know about. What is that, exactly?
Cardinalsfan (3 years ago)
You never pitch to a great hitter in that situation, especially if the next guy is a pinch hitter. You ever see teams pitch to Pujols or Bonds in that spot? Heck no, 4 wide ones and you go after the next guy. Odds are in the pitchers favor. Anyone who doesn't walk him is the idiot (mgsooner). Your trying to win the game, not prove you closer is the better man.

For the argumentative: Picker's baseball cred is way higher than yours. Same goes for wine, ballet and the entertainment industry. (You can't have everything.)

If memory is correct, the Picker played baseball at OU..... so I think he may know a thing or two about the college game......
mgsooner (3 years ago)
Hey Cardinals fan: it's "you're" not "your". Thanks.

The baseball truism that you never put the lead run on base has never been true. With first base open, this is the easiest call in the world. You walk Babe Ruth and pitch to Ralphie Poofendorfer. Duh!
Ignatz (3 years ago)
mgsooner, I played in a game once when in the bottom of the last inning with two outs, bases loaded and nursing a three run lead the coach of the team in the field intentionally walked in two runs to get to a weak hitter who promptly grounded to second. Just smart coaching.
mgsooner (3 years ago)
Ignatz, we don't need to hear about your little league baseball stories. Thanks.
dannysgirl (3 years ago)
Ah, but what you've got there, Ignatz, is a perfect situation for a weak hitter to get inspired and become a hero.

That's why I love baseball - it's so unpredictable and miracles do happen. I have to believe that - that's what has kept me a Texas Rangers fan for 30 years.
Ignatz (3 years ago)
mgsooner, you need to take some anti-churl medication quickly. Tad higher than "little league" (in fact in my two years' coaching of Little League I never saw any kid intentionally walked.) The truth is that you've been sufficiently routed by folks with superior knowledge of the game.
dannysgirl (3 years ago)
Why is it necessary to call someone an idiot and say they are moronic and belittle someone elses's comments?

It is possible to disagree with someone in an agreeable manner.

woodman (3 years ago)
This Sooner agrees!
steven arthur (3 years ago)
Two out, runner at second, u walk the batter regardless of who is at the plate and create the force out at every base. The fact that this guy is probably the best pure hitter in college baseball only serves to make this decision an even bigger no brainer.
