Coaches Change

Remember the happy and smiling Bob Stoops when he was named head coach?

Laughing, witty, open with the media.

Still beloved and championed by the in-state media, some believe Stoops has grown considerably crankier.

In a wide open interview with radio person Al Eschbach recently, OU basketball coach Jeff Capel sounded mystified and slightly put out when the team bus broke down on the way to a game in Tulsa, and star player Griffin was not surrounded by adoring fans, or even recognized in a turnpike McDonalds. Capel said that had the event taken place in North Carolina, Griffin would have been mobbed by fans.

Guess what else, coach, had it happened in North Carolina, you wouldn't have been the head coach earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per season.

OU athletics have never been in better shape: it has a chance to have the players of the year in the three major sports: football, men's basketball, women's basketball.

OU is a football monster and a basketball contender.

It's doubtful you'll hear North Carolina football coach seeming stunned that basketball runs that institution, and state.

Sorry picker, football and men's basketball may both be contenders this year, but you might as well give the women's trophy to UCONN. A 30pt demolition of the #2 UNC Tarheels in Chapel Hill should convince most everyone that this may be the best women's team of all time!

Capel has a right to crow about his team, Picker. They are in the top 10 and at this point they have to be the odds on favorite to win the conference. Not only that, they have a player of the caliber that you only see once every 25 years or so at OU. His point was that everyone needs to pay attention to this team and support it. The media needs to cover it, and the fans need to show up and watch it. I'm sure Jeff Capel realizes that this is traditionally a football state. However, that doesn't mean he has to sit back and be resigned to that. Florida is a football state also but the Gators got plenty of support when they won two consecutive titles.

Hoo: I TiVo-ed that and ran through the Ucon-NC women's game late. Never quite seen anything like that. It's like Ucon is two levels above everybody else. What does that coach do, land everybody in the northeast?

OU might be a little better. But it still doesn't look quick enough to stay anywhere near Ucon.

As far as men go, there doesn't appear to be a dominant team. Hansbro is basketball's Tebow. It's news when he ties his shoes. If Griffin doesn't get in foul trouble trying to dunk 15-footers, OU can stay with anybody.

If TU doesn't get into the NCAA is the coach in trouble?

Matthew, don't forget Kansas.

Offhand, I'd take the field against OU.

Football is king at OU, always has been, always will be. Get use to it coach. But you will get more and more respect and attendance the more you win (not whine). Doing great so far Coach Capel. Billy ball really used to pack the LNC.

Am I the only one who likes or loves Zona plus seven or seven and a half against the Steelers?

Here is the thinking on that: Warner is 235 times better than the Baltimore quarterback. And, sure, Zona's defense is fair at best. But the Steeler offense isn't the kind to run it up or dominate anybody.

Who says no one regognized Griffin at McDonalds? Maybe, just maybe people just kept their distance. I am sure a bunch of 6'3 - 6'5 guys dressed in all OU warmup gear didnt stand out at a McDonalds. Give me a break.

Sweet 16, possibly Great 8 is nothing to be ashamed of - though I have to admit, I wouldn't quit eating my hamburger to get up to shake hands.

Of course, if I'm eating a McDonald's Turnpike hamburger, it probably means I had to be starving.
JJ (4 years ago)
The OU & OSU qbs are better than the one at Baltimore. Steelers play smart defense, not necessarily a bad thing. I would think the experience of Warner would be a plus. The Pitt offense didnt exactly put on a show remember 14 points came from the int for a TD.

I meant 7 points sorry!

First of all, if the North Carolina football team were in the top 5 in the nation, then yes, Butch Davis would absolutely be crying out to the fans for much needed and deserved attention...especially if he had one of the best (if not THE best) players in the nation.

Why wouldn't someone recognize and swarm him at a McDonald's? Wouldn't people swarm Sam Bradford? How are they any different? I'll tell you how. This is Oklahoma. Put these two players in an East coast school and see who gets swarmed (hint: they both would).

Sorry Pick, I've got the Steelers winning by 10. Here's a question: Why does Donovan McNabb play like a superstar for 3 and 1/2 quarters and then turn into petrified wood? A great QB thrives in the 2 minute drill. He lacks the mustard.

Hot flash for you Sooner faithful. Stoops is slowing eroding the program. Does he bring in terrific talent year after year? Yes. Does he contend in the dismal Big 12 every year? Sure. But through his rambling inability to win bowl games in general, BCS bowls in particular, and national championship games specifically over the past five seasons, he has planted the seed of doubt into the psyche of his team. Not to mention the total humiliation suffered by the breakdown against USC.

Picker, while you can certainly never count out the Jayhawks (they have been absolutely dominant throughout the history of the Big 12), I just don't think they have what it takes to get it done this year. OU does get them in Norman, which is big. I really can't see it being anyone other than OU or Texas this year. Baylor has the talent, but Scott Drew ranks in the bottom third of the conference when it comes to X's and O's.
Arthur (4 years ago)
This is why OU is a stepping stone job. There are lots of resources and not a lot of demands. If you lose it, doesn't matter. Everyone is just waiting on the football ridiculously early preseason poll and to hear about who is and isn't leaving early for the draft. If Capel takes them deep in the tournament, I think he gets hired elsewhere, maybe even Kentucky if Gillespie keeps sucking.
Matthew (4 years ago)
The hot rumor going around coaching circles is Capel would be candidate #1 at Maryland if Gary Williams gets the axe following this season (looking likely).

Mike, yeah, you're on the popular side; somebody emailed me from a sleazy joint in Vegas and said it was already up to seven and a half!

These numbers frequently tell you which way to go. This early number is sure saying Steelers, the bookie joints are daring people to take Zona.

I just can't get over how close Baltimore played the Steelers with a totempole for a qb. Warner has some nice receivers. Number 11 has Velcro for hands. This would appear to be one of those perfect underdog bets (where it is legal) where you like the dog so much, you just stand up straight and take the risk like an adult. You lose, you lose. But seven, man, against a team with no O, it's hard to resist.

Matthew, you're right, I forgot about that one-game business with the other division, KU is in Norman.

The conference really is down isn't it, K-State, Iowa State, combined they couldn't finish .500.

Here's something somebody might be able to help with. It was emailed this morning.

Why does Texas A&M stink at everything?

That question almost gets deep fast.

Huge budget, huge ambition, huge recruiting, the football and basketball teams are and have usually been just horrendous.

Why?

Well, speaking as someone with personal interest, they got a great engineering and vet school. Or something like that.

I don't know. I asked my daughter, the Texas A&M engineer, the same question and she had no answer either. I suspect it has something to do with lousy coaching for starters and playing sports' second fiddle to UT, even if they won't admit it.

Billy Gillispie had some success while there.

This is not a good beginning to the Travis Ford era. At the season's worst point last year, after losing 6 games in a row 8,369 tickets were scanned on a Weds. in GIA against Colo. Tonight's attendance against Mizzou was 8,514. If bad attendance was the reason for Sean getting fired after two years, how long does Travis Ford have if this isn't fixed?

I like to think it is because they have horrid fans. I've never seen anyone so proud of accomplishing so little, but that's probably just wishful thinking.
dcood (4 years ago)
Hey Matt, the past crowds get turned into fish stories. I've been going to OU hoops since 1979. Tons of great teams have played in that arena and even Billy's best team (1988) didn't fill the joint all the time, only for the big games. Heck, don't take my word for it, just listen to Tubbs on the radio, he will correct all the rose-colored memories of consistent sellouts.

I want to know why there are OSU alumni still supporting the Boone lackey Holder? I don't care how much money OSU shoves into their athletic facilities, with their ignorant pricing structure, it will be 6,000 years before they can compete with OU, if ever.

When the alumni association called for their annual donation recently, I told them I had already made mine. When the gal seemed quite confused and wished me to explain further, I told her "two tickets to the OSU/OU football game at exorbitant prices, my butt permanently scared by 16" inch seats, the Cimarron Turnpike down to one lane to accommodate I guess McDonald's while still paying the toll, and one $4.00 stale pretzel. I consider that my biggest sacrifice and best donation yet."

She thanked me.

Hey Picker,

Still think the problem at TU is the fans, or do you now see the light after TU lost to a team that lost to SMU?
JJ (4 years ago)
Picker :

T A&M has only been decent...not dominant... at any sport when other teams are down. OU & TX in football in the 90s, Gillespie with basketball when OU & OSU were struggling. Seriously how long was he there 3 years? I think you can say that OSU under S. Sutton & the last years of Sampson were times when A&M had some success.
Slocum was moderately successful at a time when OU & TX werent getting the top tier & that was enough to compete. A&M is really it s own little world, have you ever been to College Station? They suck because they think that is enough.
World Picker (4 years ago)
TAB, listen, you want to fire Wojo, feel free.

The rule on firing somebody is: you're leading the charge, put your home phone number here, that way, there can be a fair discussion.

Basketball hires are, as TU fans have seen the last decade or so, risky. A coach at some flunky school gets one star player and all of a sudden everybody thinks he can coach.

So make sure the next one has a track record.

I have to admit, with that center, I thought TU would have played better. But it is close to being a decent team. Just remember, there's worse.

The lack of support at OSU is puzzling. There's something better to do in Stillwater than watch basketball?

Capel is whining about a lack of attention.

Football teams win more than the basketball teams, that's a factor.
Keyboard Cowboy (4 years ago)
{The lack of support at OSU is puzzling. There's something better to do in Stillwater than watch basketball? }

Cold, very cold. Funny, but cold.

I speak as a previous (sometimes) attendee. Much of the alumni don't like what is happening in Stillwater. It's a protest against Mike Holder and some of the adopted policies favoring strictly the money, and not the ordinary Joe's who were there through thick and thin.

And I didn't care for the way Sean Sutton was treated either. Even if Travis Ford pans out to be better, and I think he will, considering what Eddie Sutton had done for the university (minus the tipping of the bottle), OSU could have handled the Sean situation with far more class.

Just my opinion.
