Coaching Moves No Longer Automatic
Published: 4/6/2007 11:44 AM

The recent move to coaches staying where they are or jumping to smaller schools is great news for places like Tulsa and Oral Roberts.
TU has long suffered from coaches jumping at the first chance.
That trend seems to be turning around.
Now, coaches are taking into account more factors and those should work in the favor of places like TU and ORU.
Steve Alford trades Iowa of the Big Ten for New Mexico of the Mountain West. Tubby Smith goes from Kentucky to Minnesota.
Sure, there are always going to be those jobs out there to alluring to coaches. Thus, Billy Gillispie goes from Texas A&M, a school that he built into a winner and was willing to pay him up to $2 million per year, to Kentucky.
But jumping at the first chance, such as when Steve Robinson left Tulsa for Florida State, may not be automatic any longer.
That's good news for the mid-majors. Coaches now realizes money and resources aren't the only factors in such a choice.
Now, job security and quality of life are big issues.
It is a refreshing trend in a profession that often seems solely driven by money.

I tend to agree with what you say here, John. It might be a tad early to take much comfort, though, because the snowball hasn't quit rolling down the hell just yet.
