Co-coordinators Heupel, Norvell to cash in on promotion

The OU Board of Regents meets today in Oklahoma City, and the only two Sooner coaches up for raises are the new co-offensive coordinators.

Josh Heupel and Jay Norvell won't just share a job title, they'll share the same salary -- $330,000.

Heupel's raise rockets him from his old figure of $250,000. He was the lowest-paid assistant on OU's staff, until Bob Stoops tapped him to help replace Kevin Wilson when Wilson left his gig as offensive coordinator to take over at Indiana.

Now, Heupel and Norvell own the second-highest salary among Sooner assistants. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables is paid $440,000.

Norvell was making $255,000 as assistant offensive coordinator under Wilson, who brought in $430,000.

Heupel's raise is his fifth in six years as an OU staffer. He was paid $120,000 when he took the job as quarterbacks coach at the end of the 2005 season, after Chuck Long left for San Diego State.

The lowest-paid assistant is now Bruce Kittle, whose $240,000 salary is also expected to be approved by the regents today. After Wilson left, Stoops hired Kittle as tight ends and tackles coach. Kittle spent last season, his first at OU, as on-campus recruiting coordinator.

Not a bad gig at all plus you get the best seats in the house...

"Hedged"...they also take all of the HEAT when OU underperforms too.

Josh Heupel, if he performs as expected, may very well be the OU Head Coach of the not too distant future. I think Bob Stoops is grooming him to take over in about 5 years.

They are both very good coaches. I wish them well.
It is sad that we are teaching your young men and women that it is better to have a job for a top 10 program because the pay and benefits are better!
A high school or college instructor with a Masters and PHD do not get close this this type of salary.
70% of most general family practice doctors do not make this kind of money.
Career path options apprear to be out of whack..

All it takes is the courage to play football & then to study it & ask questions on a daily basis....

If you take those answers & apply them to your game, the coaches will notice & give the career guidance that you worked for & then it's all up to you....

Hard work & dedication go a long way in any career path direction, not everyone has that determination inside themselves when they are young, including myself, but I sure wish that I had when I was at that perfect time & place for growing & learning....
