College Football Should Be Arrested
Published: 9/15/2008 4:48 PM
Last Modified: 9/15/2008 4:48 PM

Here it is Sept. 16, and the college football season is for the most part over.

The most part is: USC will be a double-digit favorite in all of its remaining games, possibly even 20-point favorites in all of them, and is a walkover to the title game.

The Pac Ten is a bad joke. It isn't USC's fault that the Pac Ten stinks.

It is the NCAA's fault that a team can be rewarded so extravagantly for doing so little.

Without a four-team playoff, half the season ended Sept. 16, and the other half was decided in this manner: USC will face either the Big 12 or the SEC winner, with the other more than likely being cheated out of a title shot.

Guess what, the Big 12 is better than the low-ball being played with the SEC this season -- great defenses down there, but no long ball.

USC is good, not great. The quarterback is all right, period. Don't forget, all it did was beat a national punchline, Ohio State. At least we did at this early date get rid of all Big Ten lame pretensions. All that's left to see about is JoePa's Penn State team, which could be decent because of all the players charged with various indescretions. Time was, JoePa ran a tight ship. Now it's more like a pirate privateer.

The only unknown in the Pac Ten that could have a spark of life is Cal, which was stomped by Maryland.

On Sept. 16, the question on everybody's mind should have to do with fair play and skill. Instead it is: Who will get cheated the most?

USC has FIVE running backs that could start anywhere in America, a solid QB, a good offensive line, average receivers who will only get better as the season moves along. Their best players are on the other side of the ball. The Trojan defense is quite simply the best unit in the nation, and their team speed is unreal. Who will test them the rest of the season? Oregon, Arizona State, Cal and Notre Dame are all at home, and they don't play a Pac-10 title game, so clear sailing for the Men of Troy straight to Miami in January.

The question was who will get cheated the most?...Anyone of the elite teams in a conference that plays a championship game. Why does the Pac-10 and the Big 10 get away with not playing a title game? Make a rule that says you HAVE to play a conference title game to be eligible to play in the BCS championship game. Play that extra game like most everyone else does, risk the same losses, injuries and potential for playing some team you've already played like the Big XII, SEC and most other conferences do.

Teams that could challenge USC right now...LSU, Florida, Missouri, and Oklahoma. They all have the team speed necessary to compete with the Trojans...and the talent.

I don't know why I have to keep telling you all this. USC, while a good team, is NOT a walk through to the title game. They play AT Arizona, who plays them tough every time in Tucson; AT UCLA, who beat them at the Coliseum last year; AT Stanford, who I know is weak, but who also beat them at home a couple years back. I know the players are different, but the coaches are the same- and UCLA probably has a better coach now, than last year. And Oregon could pull an upset, they're not bad.

True, the PAC-10 should have a title game, but the rule is you need 12 in your conference for that to happen. I wonder if the PAC-10 could take BYU and another team, maybe Utah or UNLV or San Diego State? Who else is over on that side of the country?

I'd have a difficult time arguing with any of your points in this blog. That the season has been relegated pointless by this date is like the bowl games being rendered pointless by December 1...all except the big enchilada, that is. As a Sooner watcher I'm torn between wanting another showdown with USC and hoping that they might be upset along the way. Frankly, I have no confidence that any rematch between OU and SC would not be reminiscent of the great Orange Bowl disgrace of '04. So, I'm pulling for one of those lowly PAC 10 also rans to blindside that jackass Carroll and his band of merry miscreants. Oklahoma, for as good as they look, still must prove itself on the road to redemption.

Good points, Picker. I think it will be interesting enough though to see who will win the race to challenge USC in the end.

Dash, Florida's defense is sub-par, but their schedule does set up nicely for them. I do see them losing a game that they shouldn't down the line and falling short.

Cyko, really? UCLA?? Really??? The same UCLA that just got hammered by BYU, 97-0? Don't get me wrong, I love Uk-luh but they don't have a chance against USC. Oregon got lucky to come back and win that game against Purdue; I don't see them having that same luck against the #1 team in the nation. As far as adding teams goes, how about Fresno State? That would add some much needed competition.

As Dash Riprock says “USC has FIVE running backs that could start anywhere in America, a solid QB, a good offensive line, average receivers who will only get better as the season moves along. The Trojan defense is quite simply the best unit in the nation, and their team speed is unreal.” They will not loose a game in the Pac 10, which by the way crowns a “true” Conference Champion because in the Pac 10 you play ALL of your conference foes.

The “Snicker” is right, Half the season is over for one participant in the Nat’l Championship Game But….

Because of the BCS, there are still a lot of “exciting” events going on in college football that will not be decided until well in November:

1) Sorting through 5 to 6 teams who will face the USC “slaughter” in January. (Several Big 12 & SEC teams in the running)

2) Currently there are 7 nonBCS schools that are still in the running for a possible BCS bowl. The MWC has 4 of them. It is also possible the MWC & Conf USA could each have an undefeated team by the end of the season

3) The anticipation of the collapse of OSU after starting out of the gate 5-0, The thrill of OU “giving” a game to an inferior foe, & the Amazing story being scripted @ 11th & Harvard where in 5 yrs. they’ll have gone from having a no win season to an undefeated season. Remarkable!

College football is all about the colors, the pageantry, the cheerleaders, the idol worshipping fans, & of course the “unpredictability” of a bunch of college “kids” playing a game they love!

Speed kills and USC has it. It makes UO,Mo,UF look like they are in slow motion. Believe LSU has a chance to slow them down, but not beat them. USC's only weakness appears to be therir quarterback.

It's still a long season and anything can happen. More "what ifs" out there than NCAA knows what to do with. SEC champion should still make BCS title game with 2 loses. Toughest conference and toughest scheduling deserves this consideration.

Laffalot, USC may not "loose" a game, but will they lose one? I love how you throw the jabs at OU and OSU but then show praise for TU, by the way. It is remarkable that they may go undefeated this season but let's not go so far as to crown them the king of college football in Oklahoma. If TU played the schedules that either OU or OSU played you would be singing the praises of a 7 win season at best.

MIKE: Yes, F-UCLA sucks. I know this. They sucked last year, too, and beat USC at the Coliseum. Stanford sucked two years ago when they beat a Top 3 USC team- it was one of the two wins they had that year. I know it's highly unlikely, but it's happened before. Just saying they're not a shoo-in, as some would suggest. Especially if their recent history against these teams is any indication. And who knows with Oregon, the Ducks have done it before and in L.A.
I also think it's odd that people want to say how overrated Ohio State is, then say USC is the best ever for beating them. I don't think Ohio State will even be their biggest test. And as much as I think Mike Stoops gets too much credit for what he did at OU- he always seems to have his squad ready to play USC in Tucson.
World Picker (4 years ago)
Cyco, listen, you really shouldn't say stuff like USC still has a tough road to the title game because it has to play Arizona and UCLA.

A couple of people might have thought you knew a little of what you were talking about until you said that.

The Big 12 and SEC teams have it so much tougher, it is a joke and a laughing stock. The SEC is dull offensively this year, the Big 12 is much better. Again, it's not USC's fault the system makes a mockery of the competition it purports to promote.

USC has to beat a team that just lost 100-0, and a team that New Mexico beat, and a team that is "not bad?"

As reported, the season is mostly over in the middle of September; who gets cheated, the Big 12 or the SEC?

cyco myko (4 years ago)
Licker,
Yes, I know these teams blow. I've always thought they sucked and I will continue to think this. That is my point. UCLA sucked last year and WON. Stanford sucked really bad and WON. And Arizona sucks, but has played them close in Tucson under M. Stoops. I know it sounds crazy, and it sounded crazy when these teams beat USC the last couple of years. But they did it. As Chris Berman would say, "That's why you play the games."
I know on paper USC should smoke these teams, but the simple fact of the matter is the last couple of years- THEY HAVEN'T. Will things change this year? I hope so.

Quoting Can of Corn Berman, praising Mike Stoops, Cyco, you're all right.

Relax, enjoy the system that tilted the riches your way. The ONLY team that looks like it can play half a lick out there is Cal. There's one fishy number this week, mighty Georgia is less than a TD favorite at piddly Arizona State. What that usually means is State will be all over Ga.

Your only weakness is the qb, whose feet seem late. The tailbacks are mind-boggling and the short-ish passing game to tight ends and the fullback and halfbacks is the best in the history of football.

Could anybody imagine there being undefeated teams from the Pac Ten, the Big 12 and the SEC? Talk about disorder.
MIKE (4 years ago)
At this point Pick, it's hard to tell who will get cheated. Maybe they both get cheated by a team in a conference that doesn't have to play a conference championship game (i.e. last year). I think that with all things considered both the SEC and the Big 12 are pretty close in terms of talented teams--arguments can be made going both ways. The point is this: If both conferences are left out of the BCS title game, that's the real cheat.
Chris (4 years ago)
Having USC play a Pac-10 title game is like having OU play Baylor twice in the Big 12, pointless.

Who are they going to play that will beat them? UCLA? Cal? Or-o-gen?

Please.
MIKE (4 years ago)
Woah, woah, woah there, Picker. Did I just read that you think Cal is the only team in the PAC 10 that can play a lick?? The same Cal team that was down by 20+ points to Maryland whom they eventually lost to? The same Maryland team that lost to powerhouse Middle Tennessee the week before and barely squeezed out a win against Delaware their first week? That Cal team?? Oh, I can't wait for the explanation for this one.
cyco myko (4 years ago)
My brother, who knows I went to USC and follow them closely, asked me on our way to Norman a couple weeks back. "Cyco, is USC good enough to win the National Championship this year?"
I responded, "I'm not sure. I don't know what their salary cap is this year."
World Picker (4 years ago)
Mike, maybe Mary is decent.

Tennessee takes out Florida this week.
cyco myko (4 years ago)
Alright Licker,
Quick point: You say USC's only weakness is the quarterback? Maybe. But if true, don't you think that's a huge weakness? Great teams have been brought back to Earth by a mediocre QB. I look for it to happen with the Patriots this year in the pros. Sanchez is at the wheel for the first time on his own. And USC, like OU and other top tier teams, always come to town with a big target on their back. It's the game of the year for most teams.
MIKE (4 years ago)
I don't know, Pick. Mary lost to Middle Tennessee (not "Rocky Top" Tennessee double underlined) just the week before. They barely escaped Delaware 14-7 in Week 1! If Cal finishes in a decent spot in the Pac 10 this year, I will concede that there are only two true power conferences left in college football.
Eric (4 years ago)
Yall keep talking about USC losing to Standford two years ago....wasnt that last year?? Either way its going to be a heck of a game between them and OU.....BOOMER SOONER!!
Trav (4 years ago)
Eric, they did lose to Standford last year, and UCLA the year before. If OU and USC run the table, it's going to be one of the best games in years. Boomer Sooner!!
cyco myko (4 years ago)
TRAV & ERIC: You guys are right. It was Stanford last year and F-UCLA the year before. Both were games they should have won, and didn't. We'll see if the past is an indication of what will happen this year. If they continue to let their guard down against inferior opponents, this will happen again.
BLA (4 years ago)
First of all, we're talking this year not last year. The PAC-10 is awful and USC is an NFL team that is playing in a HS league. Second, USC doesn't have any huge weaknesses...OU does...it's secondary is just plain awful. While OU's front 7 are fast and good...USC's speed at the skill positions is simply better. USC's speed in the secondary will turn OU into a more 1 dimensional team, which is something no other team in the nation can do. I am not a USC fan per se, just that I enjoy watching good teams play at the top of their game. While all of the top tier teams have great talent and speed, USC has something the others don't- Pete Carroll. He is simply a pro coach with pro schemes who is able to teach those complicated schemes to college players with the physical and mental abilities to grasp them. No other team in the country has the same combination of coaching and player personnel and that is why USC should win the nat'l championship this year.
