Company for Beetle Bailey?

I respect Missouri's journalism school, which produced my favorite ESPN SportsCenter anchor, John Anderson.
I respect the fact that Mizzou -- true story -- has a Beetle Bailey statue on its campus.
But I'm having trouble respecting the choice of Missouri as the favorite to win the Big 12 North.
Nothing against the current crop of players at Missouri. Fine lads, I'm sure. But history is the reason for my raised eyebrow. Quick, name the last time the Tigers won anything of significance in football.
Maybe this isn't a jab at Missouri. Maybe it's a jab at the relative strength of the Big 12 North. Is there another BCS conference in America where Missouri would be picked to win a league or division? The Big 12 North is weaker than Popeye minus spinach. Evidence? Baylor went 3-0 against the Big 12 North last season and lost to every South opponent by double-digits.
Just guessing, but if Missouri was in the Big 12's southern hemisphere, the Tigers would be picked no better than fourth.
If Gary Pinkel can lead Missouri to a championship, they should build a statue of him next to the one of Beetle Bailey.

You make several good points, Jimmie. Mizzou under Pinkel has gone to great lengths to disappoint over the past few seasons. They continue to lose to teams that they should wallop (which come become a real factor this year if they can't get by Illinois and Mississippi). But this year's installment might surprise. Daniel is the real article and the Tigers have the added advantage of hosting Callahan and company. Forget the Big 12 title, but the Big 12 North is attainable and Pinkel knows fully well (as was demonstrated by last season's attempt to put on a happy face with the media and administration that he's been alienating for years with his grumpy - dare I say it? - Bob Stoopslike behavior) that if he slips up and puts in another sub-par year by going 6-6 or 7-5 when he should be winning nine games, he could be headed for an untenured position at Montana State.

...and if he DOES flub up the Tigers' 2007 edition, there might be a statue of Mr. Peanut standing next to the statue of Beetle Bailey some January, '08.
