Compared to last year, Media Days could be quiet for Cowboys

IRVING, Texas – During last year’s Big 12 Media Days event, reporters were anxious to talk with Oklahoma State representatives. Cowboy football was a hot topic.

On Tuesday, when coach Mike Gundy, quarterback Brandon Weeden, linebacker Orie Lemon and defensive end Jamie Blatnick make their Media Days appearance, it likely will be a relatively quiet session.

A year ago, four Oklahoma State players – wide receiver Dez Bryant, offensive tackle Russell Okung, running back Kendall Hunter and kickoff-return specialist Perrish Cox – were on the first team of the preseason All-Big 12 team.

A year ago, OSU was No. 9 in the Associated Press’ preseason poll. After beating Georgia in the opener, the Cowboys were No. 5. When the AP preseason poll is released next month, it is doubtful that OSU – faced with perhaps the most comprehensive rebuilding project in program history – will get a single vote.

This year, 10 schools are represented on the All-Big 12 preseason list. Iowa State is not. Oklahoma State is not.

Cowboy running back Kendall Hunter absolutely should have been on the team. When he missed a substantial portion of the 2009 season with a foot injury, Hunter apparently was forgotten by most Big 12 media members. However, no other Cowboy has the type of track record to merit an all-conference vote in July.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. Five years from now, no one will remember or care who was on the 2010 All-Big 12 preseason team. Five weeks from now, no one will remember or care.

But whether a coach or a player does it, someone will make sure that everyone within the OSU program is aware that the Cowboys were blanked on the All-Big 12 ballots.

You think Oklahoma State’s players might be motivated when practice begins on Aug. 6?

No doubt OkSt will be motivated when practice begins on Aug 6th. They've been ignored or dismissed by CFB reporters locally, regionally and nationally. From the blogs I've seen, opponents' fans seem indignant about OkSt's past success as well as any liklihood of future success. I hope this gives the Cowboys all the motivation they need to prove the critics wrong. I hope IowaSt takes the North. Like to see OkSt players exceed all expectations in the South.

The reporters might forget OSU. I hope the coaches on the other teams feel the same way too. I think OSU might be the biggest spoiler maker in the conference. Seriously, recruiting has been strong, new offensive playbook with a proven history, and an improved defense too.
I understand Texas and OU being ranked higher. Tuberville is suppose to out coach Gundy? A&M didn't look too bright last year either. I doubt that they improve that much over the year.

I agree with Work in Progress - it's hard to understand why so many have chosen both Tech and A&M ahead of OSU. Tech has an entirely new coaching staff that will have to adjust to the type of players they've been recruiting for so many years out there, while A&M is being lauded for "only losing a few of their games by 10 points or less" nevermind the fact that they looked abysmal in other games.

106th & Park, not only does Tech have a brand new coaching staff, they are switching from the 4-3 defense to the 3-4. Everybody wants to talk about how difficult it is to change offenses but nobody realizes that it is just as hard if not harder to change defenses like that. The learning curve will definitely be steep.

A&M's offense has the potential to be really good. Fortunately, their defense is still going to be awful. They will be involved in a lot of shootouts and as thin as they are on D, I don't see them winning many 4th quarter battles.

OSU is in a good position to "sneak up" on the conference. As a fan, though, I hope the program soon becomes big enough that it can no longer sneak up on anybody.
