Conference call-out
Published: 7/17/2007 12:09 AM

The 11 Big 12 Conference schools located outside Austin were gift-wrapped some bulletin board material recently thanks to someone named Neil Barduson of something called The Football Expert.com.

Barduson decided to make the Big 12 his more overrated conference in college football with these words: "The only team in the Big 12 that has the chance to make the national title game is Texas... Other than Texas, the Big 12 consists of average football teams."

Wow. Baylor certainly fits Barduson's bill. So does Iowa State, Colorado and Kansas. Maybe Texas Tech, unless quarterback Graham Harrell finds his range and throws for 5,000 yards.

But Nebraska? Average? A couple years ago, sure, but let's give Bill Callahan a little credit. Texas A&M? With a backfield of Stephen McGee, Mike Goodson and Jorvorskie Lane, not to mention tight end Martellus Bennett? OSU? With its flying circus of an offense?

And how do you think Barduson's comment is playing at OU? Probably about as well as Larry Birdine's imfamous "I see an average football team" comment about USC played at Troy in the days leading up to the 2005 Orange Bowl.

The Sooners can only hope they prove Barduson as wrong as the Trojans proved Birdine wrong a couple years ago.
