Congrats to Route 66 runners; Don't miss TU-Houston

Dave Sittler is under the weather this week, so we've postponed our weekly video.

Join us again next week as we break down Bedlam.

With no video to link this week, I decided to hit a few things on my mind.

Congrats to Route 66 runners
Congratulations to all who participated in the Route 66 marathon and half marathon. I'm really disappointed I missed it. I look forward to running my first Route 66 half next November.

I went from the couch to a half marathon about five years ago thanks to a running group in the Houston area. I found it to be one of the most positive experiences I've ever had.

The camaraderie and encouragement among runners is incredible, and the sense of accomplishment after completing that kind of distance is something worth experiencing.

If you know of a half marathon in the area in March or April, send me a note. I hope to be back in shape for that distance by then.

Tulsa-Houston should be great
I'm really looking forward to Friday's Tulsa-Houston game.

I was surprised by the line. Tulsa is getting a lot of respect, opening as just a three-point underdog to a team in the top 10.

The Cougars and quarterback Case Keenum are definitely tough. But the Golden Hurricane is probably the best team Houston has played all season (the Cougars' best non-C-USA win is UCLA, 38-34).

If you get a chance, you should definitely try to make it out to Chapman Stadium on Friday morning.

I'll be rooting for Bob Davie at New Mexico
I know the hiring of former Notre Dame coach and current ESPN analyst Bob Davie as the head football coach at New Mexico has been widely panned.

But count me among those who will be pulling for Davie.

I don't know Davie, but one interaction with him when I was a student at Texas A&M always stood out.

Davie, the Aggies' defensive coordinator at the time, was on the sidelines of the practice field during a spring scrimmage calling defensive signals.

A group of writers standing next to Davie asked the coach what it all meant. So for the next several plays, Davie took the writers through the signals. He called out the name of each hand sign and explained what those calls meant to his defense.

I remember Davie as friendly and confident. I hope that rubs off on a struggling New Mexico program.

I don't think any local media outlet, including this paper, have given TU-Houston an appropriate amount of coverage. Shame, shame.

The OKC Memorial Marathon is in late April, and it's quite the experience. I highly recommend doing that race. I've run the half once.

The Post Oak Lodge Challenge is in February '12. It includes multiple distance events over 2 days, and offers unprecedented views of Tulsa and the Osage Hills. I highly recommend it.

I thought we did a pretty good job previewing the Tulsa-Houston game. Turns out, it wasn't as close as I thought it would be. But the Hurricane has a chance to play and win a bowl game. It's been a pretty nice season.
Thanks for the suggestions on the races. I'll look into both of them. I imagine the OKC race is especially meaningful. Thanks again for responding.

The Dallas Rock n' Roll Half Marathon is at the end of March. It is a very well run and fun run. I did it this year and plan to again next year.

I've wanted to do the Dallas Rock n' Roll for a couple of years, but it has interfered with work I've needed to do with the NCAA basketball tournament. I did the America's Run a couple of years ago that finished inside Cowboys Stadium, but I don't think they ran it again after that one year. Thanks for the suggestion.
