Lost in the summertime shuffle has been the court case involving Oklahoma State football player Teddy Johnson.
The sophomore-to-be from Coppell, Texas, was charged in Payne County in late April with driving under the influence and obstructing an officer, both misdemeanors.
Johnson, 21, was stopped by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol in Stillwater for going 45 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to the affidavit. The patrolman noticed the vehicle was rocking after pulling into a parking lot and later discovered the driver, identified as Johnson, had switched places with a passenger – prompting the obstruction charge.
The patrolman smelled alcohol and gave Johnson a field sobriety test, the affidavit states. After failing the test, Johnson was taken to the Payne County Jail and given a breath test, which revealed a blood-alcohol content level of .13.
Johnson was booked into jail and later was released on a $1,000 bond, according to court documents. In his initial court appearance on April 24, he pleaded not guilty. Last week, his hearing was set for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 20.
As a redshirt freshman walk-on, Johnson was a key member of the Cowboys’ coverage unit on special teams. During a 66-6 victory against Texas Tech, he jumped on a fumbled punt to set up a touchdown drive.
Johnson also was a reserve linebacker last season but is expected to move to fullback this fall.
