Can you actually believe where we are?

November is here.

The 2011 college football is winding down. Fans are jockeying for tickets to the last game in New Orleans. Fans are deep into BCS numbers, trying to figure out a way to get their teams into the finals.

And if it wins four games in which it is apt to be favored, Oklahoma State will play for a national championship.

Not in wrestling.

Not in golf.

Not in rodeoing.

In football!

Oklahoma State controls its destiny to the national championship game in football.

Getting there would be the biggest sports story in many a year.

This is the team OU bullies used to laugh at. A team that used to play in a rust bucket of a stadium.

It won't be easy. K-State at home this weekend is a joke. Then it will be down to three. At Texas Tech. At Iowa State. OU in Stillwater. For a shot at all the glory. The weather at Lubbock and Ames could come into play. Neither are garden spots. The Tech quarterback can play. And Iowa State is a threat with its new quarterback.

But it should all come down to OU at OSU.

OSU should be favored by one point.

Venables is obviously a good man, a family man, a loyal man. But sometimes the people he coaches on defense don't know what to do.

An insane amount of pressure would be on OSU in the OU game.

But OU isn't out of the title chase yet.

Stanford is a joke. Oregon will score 75 on that defense even though the game is at Stanford. LSU or Alabama would defeat Stanford or Boise State by a ton. Only OSU or OU can compete with the SEC champ.

There's a tendency to feel sorry for Boise State if it gets shut out again. But it has a choice of conferences. You want to be a major player, get out of the sissy league.

The story of the century edges closer.

Only folks who feel even remotely sorry for Boise...is Boise. Their schedule is an embarrassment to the entire top 25 and their BCS poll position shows just how flawed the BCS is. Part of me hopes they get into the title game just so they can be pummeled back into the stone age where they belong.

WS game 6 too much for Bevo - he tanked with the Rangers.

How 'bout that SMU by 4 over Tulsa pick. OU will take care of any thoughts the Cowboys may be having about a national title shot. OU over the Pokes by 10.
The Picker (last year)
It's doubtful Venables could stop OSU with 15 players on the field.

Four things have to happen for OU to get into the title game:

1. Oregon has to beat Stanford. Could easily happen. Or Stanford needs to lose in the conference title game. Stanford is overrated. As is the quarterback. He's good. Not great.

2. Alabama or LSU needs to beat the other by double figures so that the loser falls below OU.

3. OU needs to pass Boise State.

4. OU needs to beat OSU.

It's true, if Boise wants to be big time, it has to play big time.

Boone: How about the Ohio State and Nebraska picks? Forgot those, did you. You taking OU and giving OSU and ten for anything more than hot air?
Dr. Strangelove (last year)
The pokes are looking pretty strong right now- I would say the Picker has nailed this one, at least OU has a shot, right?
The Picker (last year)
Yep, if those four things happen.

A last-second Alabama-LSU game is big trouble in terms of a boring rematch. The BCS system has no common sense.
Solo (last year)
Stanford will lose - eventually.

If OU wins out, schedule/quality would lift OU in BCS over Boise and LSU-Bama loser regardless of score.

None of the above matters as OSU is most likely the homer team to get a title shot.

Here's what we've learned:

1. The Big XII needs to stay at ten or eleven teams to avoid the championship game at all cost. Teams like oSu this year and OU and Texas most years are good enough to beat everybody, but maybe not quite good enough to beat everybody twice. Avoid the championship game, which has done nothing for the conference except cost us four additional shots at the marbles.

2. Don't ever say "pre-season rankings don't mean anything." Sooners get killed by Taco at home, who then proceeds to lose at home to the second worst team in the conference by something like 87 to 14. A week later, Sooners are 6th in America and were a triple overtime away from being fifth.
The Picker (last year)
Soko, excellent point on pre-season rankings. They mean a ton to teams who get them.

Solo, you mean to actually think a 35-34 Alabama/LSU game would mean less to the BCS than losing at home to the Tech wimps?

Not hardly.

And actually, it's doubtful if the math would even let OU pass Boise.....the win over Georgia got Boise way overrated, and it has a decent TCU team left. It's far ahead of OU now.
Solo (last year)
soko - your 2nd point is spot on. Boise has made a living on pre-season overrated garbage and hangs around while attrition in the stronger leagues keeps them there. pathetic. Your 1st point is predicated on winning and rankings. The conferences are more concerned about revenue and conf championship games bring in buckets of it.

pick - a tight LSU-Bama game with still another month to go after could leave enough time for OU to climb over the loser and Boise. Would depend on ridiculous factors including OU winning big in all games going out, the voters and the stupid computer model...etc etc...we could speculate till Bevo turns back over...doesn't matter...OSU has the best shot physically and with the math.

Okie St & "Big Red" will hang a half a hundred on the Sooners....

The Sooners may get a quarter hundred in the OKIE edition of "When Worlds Collide"....

Okie St-52 Sooners-27

2-3 Poke offensive short drive td's off of Landry turnovers....
The Picker (last year)
OU could score 27 on that defense in its sleep.
Solo (last year)
OU problem isn't scoring...problem is keeping other team from scoring more...
Tulsan in Exile (last year)
I would like nothing better than to see the Pokes play for the BCS "crown." But I see disappointment looming again. Small-Game Bob can't seem to prepare his team consistently for all the chumps they should beat handily... T. Tech, Boise, the hicks from WVU... the list is getting pretty long. But he still has the ability to get the Sooners ready for the big games. I think OU clobbers OSU once again, though it will do them no good. A third-rate Boise team is likely to be playing Bama or LSU... ridiculous.

Some Huge games Nov 12th.
Oregon @ Stanford
TCU @ Boise St.
TCU might have a little Mojo
Since MWC made them move this game to Boise

OSU will be 11-0 when OU comes to town
It’ll be a great shoot out
O/U of that game will be over close to 100 pts

"OU could score 27 on that defense in its sleep."

While they can rack up tons of yardage against OSU, let's not automatically liken that to scoring.

First off, OSU has the 26th best redzone defense in the nation. And that's saying a lot considering the opposing offenses have so many more opportunities because of how fast the OSU offense operates. OSU may give up yards between the 20's but they put the clamp down when it counts.

Second, the OU offense has shown some trouble at points trying to score within the redzone. Now before OU fans get crimson in the face, I'm well aware that they are 15th in the nation in redzone conversions. But I think an honest OU fan will admit that there has been trouble at times with punching it in when close to the goal line.

I don't think OSU will hold OU to only 27 but at the same time I don't think scoring will be a breeze for OU either.

Not being flippant. Let's give it to Mr. T. Boone Pickens. Quickly.

After the OSU game the crimson and crap will get a new d-man. Welcome back little bro.

Good blog Pic. Thanks for the spread prediction. I will root for either team to defeat the SEC!

When Gundy first took over Okie St., I honestly thought he wouldn't last, I thought he was over his head....

Each year his team has gotten better, he has built them up the correct way in every way.... Now he has depth to replace those that leave, dare I say, now he reloads instead of rebuild....

He will someday rise to the level of one of the greatest coaches in Oklahoma history if he stays....

Amazing, at first I couldn't imagine him lasting, now I can't imagine him leaving, I was wrong then, could I be wrong now ????

Kudos Coach Gundy....

OSU is one of three to be able to control its destiny -- Alabama and LSU are the others.

Win out, you're in.

If Stanford wins out, over Oregon and the other side of that dog conference in a playoff -- Ariz State -- it gets cheated most by the BCS.

How did Boise State get so highly rated in the BCS numbers?
MexiMike (last year)
How did Boise State get so highly ranked?

You know the answer to this, Pick. Preseason rankings.

National media loves a good story and a Cinderella team always makes for the best. Human voters will continue to stay on Boise's bandwagon until the wheels come off. I doubt the computers look at them very favorably.

Also, I was wrong. OSU's redzone defense isn't the 26th best in the nation.

It's the 10th.

I work with a guy who played with Gundy and Barry and he told me that he didnt think Gundy was a very good QB. However being an OU fan i have to give Gundy props for having a great team.

Mexi is pretty close on the Boise deal. They are the reigning non-AQ poster child for the BCS. Unless/until we get a +1 or playoff this garbage will continue.
