Cowboy QB line of succession: From Weeden to Weston
Published: 8/30/2012 10:40 AM

Just because it has a certain ring to it, I’m pegging the Oklahoma State quarterback transition this way: Weeden to Weston.

During the last two seasons, OSU was quarterbacked by Brandon Weeden, who did it so well that he was picked in the first round by the Cleveland Browns and he then proceeded to unseat incumbent starter Colt McCoy faster than you can get a drive-thru sandwich.

The Cowboys will be quarterbacked this season by Wes Lunt, a first-year freshman whose first name is really Weston. You can check his birth certificate if you want. Or you can call his dad, like I did, and he told me that Weston isn’t named after anyone. The family just liked the name and they already had a son named Wil, so they just stuck with a “W” theme.

OSU coach Mike Gundy should be able relate. All of his sons (Gavin, Gunnar, Gage) have “G” names.

Weeden? Weston? OSU’s “W” boys also have October in common. Their birthdays are one week (and 10 years) apart in October. Because Weeden tried professional baseball before college, he didn’t start a game for the Cowboys until he was 26 and he accumulated 23 “W’s” as a starting QB. Weston will be 18 when he tries to collect his first “W” at Savannah State’s expense Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium.
