Cowboy basketball trio named captains for next season

Brian Williams, Markel Brown and Michael Cobbins will serve as Oklahoma State basketball captains for the upcoming season, coach Travis Ford announced Wednesday.

“At first I was surprised,” Williams said during a telephone interview from Atlanta’s airport. “But after that feeling went away, I was ready to go to work.”

The trio is among the most veteran players on the team. Cobbins and Williams redshirted their freshman seasons and will be sophomores this year, while Brown is a junior.

“We’ve seen a little bit of everything,” Williams said. “ … I think (Ford) kind of trusts us to lead the team. He knows we’ve got a lot of experience over the last couple of seasons.”

The selections make sense after an unkind offseason for the Cowboys’ seniors. Darrell Williams is off the team after being convicted of rape by instrumentation and sexual assault, Philip Jurick has been suspended indefinitely amid drug-possession charges and Jean-Paul Olukemi still hasn’t heard from the NCAA regarding his eligibility for the spring semester.

On a brighter note, OSU left Wednesday for 10 days in Spain, where they will compete in exhibition games against international teams.

“First and foremost, I hope we get some wins out of it,” Brian Williams said. “And after that, I hope we bond as a team and everybody can establish their roles early.”
