Cowboys Need Defensive Help
Published: 10/23/2010 7:46 PM

Oklahoma State, because of a terrific offense, will have chances to win most of its remaining five games.
But, OSU's defense could leave several of those games in doubt.
Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez tore apart OSU's secondary in a 51-41 victory in Stillwater.
OSU had 495 yards in offense. That should be enough to win most games.
But, the Cowboys gave up 540 yards to the Huskers, including 323 passing.
That is a serious problem. The Huskers had shown no signs of passing in games earlier this season.
So, it is back to work for the Cowboys. Finding some defenders who want to make tackles and cover someone will be at the top of the list.

Either the defensive players are not inspired or the coaching is not getting thru. Halfway through the season the defense should not be misisng so many tackles or allowing kickoff returns, fake punts, and sO much time to pass. They just have not improved much. Having trouble against the likes of Troy, A&M, and LA-Lafayette should have been a wake-up call.

Davie, I don't consider Troy or A&M 'bad' teams. They may not be world beater but they were hardly without talent. Even Louisiana at home, no informed opinion ever thought that would be a gimmee. Big XII teams have lost there before. It hurts to have lost to Nebraska, but I guess I have to agree with the TW Picker that Nebraska has a very good team this year, one that rates with other good teams they have had there. Do wish the Pokes could have made some tackles it looked like they were very close to having. We have the players we have on defense. Could've wished for better against NU, but even against NU they made some plays and if they keep working to make plays the way they have been, there's still some good things out there to accomplish. Won't happen without the same effort they've been given, hope they're still up for it ... Go Pokes !

Every team in college football needs some defensive help with the exception of LSU and 'Bama (and LSU has no offense). Reason: Teams using the spread offense and recruiting more heavily on the skill side of the ball. Defenses are not as deep as offenses and they tire more quickly chasing the rabbits down. Add in 250 lb QBs who run the ball like tanks and throw it 60+ yards. A look at many of the defensive backfields when they are recruited and the player is not listed as a DB or FS, but as an athlete meaning no one knows which side of the ball they are going to play on. A lot of DB's are converted RB's and WR's who have the speed to play on defense but maybe not on offense.

15 years ago the defense was expected to keep the offense under 20 points to win. That has now gone to 30 points maybe 35. Spread offense, no huddle just kills the defense. There is a reason that OSU scores almost every time they don't have a 3 and out. Offense has 350 lb lineman, defense has 250 lb lineman that need to be able to run. Defenses are getting smaller and faster. Offenses are winning.

Also, they're young.
