Dallas-area defensive tackle prospect commits to Hurricane

As seniors Daeshon Bufford and Derrick Jackson got the great majority of the snaps at defensive tackle for the 2012 University of Tulsa football team, there exists in 2013 the opportunity for young tackles to command playing time.

With that in mind, Lionel Phillips announced his commitment to TU on Friday night. A 6-foot-2, 285-pound tackle from Naaman Forest High School in Garland, Texas, Phillips chose the Golden Hurricane over Houston and New Mexico.

“(TU coaches) have been talking with me since the spring time,” said Phillips, who will make an official visit to the TU campus on Jan. 18. “I got the offer during the summer. There’s a chance to play at Tulsa as a freshman.”

Recruited by Hurricane defensive tackles coach Calvin Thibodeaux, Phillips made an unofficial visit to TU during the summer. He also throws the shot put for the Naaman Forest track team.

Verbal commitments are not binding. Recruits may sign national letters of intent in February. Five of the 19 players on Tulsa’s commitment list hail from Texas. Phillips is one of four defensive linemen on the list. The others are Dalton Rodriguez, an end who last week switched his commitment from Oklahoma to TU; Jesse Brubaker, a tackle from East High School in Wylie, Texas; and Donnie White, an end from De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis.
