Danny Manning: The day after

With an evening to reflect, how do you feel about the phrase, "Tulsa men's basketball coach Danny Manning?"
Manning made his first appearance in town as coach Wednesday, drawing at least 100 media, school officials and fans.
The turnout at Chapman Stadium's ONEOK Club was impressive. As one Golden Hurricane fan mentioned on Twitter yesterday, Tulsa basketball is still very important in this town.
So how did Manning do? He was a little less impressive in the press conference setting than I expected. He sounded like someone who doesn't do much media -- one of the things we've heard about him and one thing that will definitely change in his new role.
His answers were efficient, if somewhat guarded.
But really it doesn't matter what he says as long as he runs a clean, successful program.
The current group of signees have recommitted to the program, while the current players who were in attendance Wednesday said all the right things.
There was one notable absence -- junior-to-be Jordan Clarkson, who's dad said at the beginning of the coaching search that his son would explore all his options.
Clarkson was said to be in class at the time of the press conference, but his teammates said he was as enthusiastic about the hire as they were.
We'll see.
We'll also see what Manning does to complete his coaching staff -- another important development in his maiden voyage as a head coach.
He's already hired Brett Ballard and Justin Bauman, two Kansas guys with little Division I coaching experience. You can read more about Manning's first two hires in Friday's Tulsa World.
Manning could use an assistant with some Division I head coaching experience. He could also use one with some Tulsa ties.
There are plenty of challenges remaining for Manning. But given the reaction to him Wednesday, reinvigorating the fan base doesn't appear to be one of them.

Brutal. All Tulsa has to do is hold onto the ball for five seconds and can't do it.
