New Tulsa coach Danny Manning has “a wow factor”, said Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson.

“You’ll see when you meet him,” said Hinson, the former coach at Kelley High School and Oral Roberts. “He is just one of those guys. When you talk with him you understand.

“There’s just something about him. I think all of the folks in Tulsa are going to like him. I think that was a good hire.”

Manning, who was on a national sports talk show on Tuesday, will be at a TU press conference on Wednesday.

Manning led Kansas to the 1988 national championship and played for 15 years in the NBA.

He has been a fulltime assistant at KU for the past five years. Hinson was on the Kansas staff with him for the past four years.

“You are talking about a legendary former player,” said Hinson. “He was a great player in both college and the pros.

“Then, you add what he has done as an assistant at Kansas. He was unbelievable in coaching our bigs. He has that wow factor.”

Manning said on a national sports talk show on Tuesday he would not shy away from recruiting five-star prospects at Tulsa.

He said he is ready to go to work and get Tulsa back to the NCAA Tournament.

Former TU coach Doug Wojcik was recently fired after seven seasons.

Tulsa has not played in the NCAA Tournament in nine years.

Saw very little "Wow" from him on the bench or in the huddle during the National Championship Game -- he looked positively somnambulent. Maybe the extra $$$$ on the paycheck will raise his "Wow" level...
