Daytona 500: Sport or Wrestling on Wheels?
Published:
2/18/2008 4:25 PM
Last Modified:
2/18/2008 4:25 PM
A legitimate argument can be made against the Daytona 500 being a sport.
When a time out is called during a sport, action ceases.
When a tennis player goes to the lockerrom for a break, the court is not peppered with aces.
When time out is called and players gather around the mound in baseball, the batter cannot pick up the ball and line it into left center for a stand-up double.
When a time out is called on the gridiron, the football cannot be advanced.
During a time out in basketball, you just can't go out there and dunk to your heart's content for two points times however many.
Yet in car racing, considerable progress can be made under a caution flag; yes, even winning moves are advanced during a time out. If an advertising sticker flies off a hood and sticks on a competitor's windshield, the field can make up 50 lengths during the TO, baby!
Imagine between periods at a hockey game, a player racing onto the ice and scoring on the Zamboni machine and having it count!
At the Daytona 500 just concluded, one car pushed another car past the finish line to win the event!
Tag-team car-wrestling, you gotta love it!
In other non-sporting events over the weekend, you had the OU women's basketball team.

Somewhere in Oklahoma at this very instant, you have just pissed off a fat toothless nascar fan with a "3" tattoo on his calf. Job well done picker!
"Hey Bubba, what did you do Sunday?"
"I watched fast cars make left turns for 4 hours!"

Great comment, Zach. Are you after the picker's job?
Doc Smarba
Dear Pick,
Most sports reset the competition at one point or another during the course of the season. Otherwise, no "wild-card" team would ever have a chance to play for a championship.
I encourage you to educate yourself on a subject before criticizing it.

Fishing, cheerleading, poker. These are the REAL sports I crave. I don't consider the ability to maintain control of a car while traveling 190+ mph in an enviroment where the temperature exceeds 120 degrees for over 4 hours all while surrounded by 42 other cars which are much of the time bouncing off each other accomplishment at all.

Dear Zach:
Was that your sister or your wife I saw trying to suck start your Vespa morotcycle last week? They look alike from the rear. Talk about your retreads.
Dear World Picker, WBB score:
Kansas State 68
OSU 63
Guess the score didn't come across the Bigot Sports Wire or you would have commented on it.
So Zach, you are telling me all NASCAR drivers have taken a turn to the Left? Right!
World Picker please don't tell me you actually get paid for the drivel you spew . The stockholders of TW need to investigate the misuse of corporate assets if you are paid more than $1 per annum token salary.
Where are your minions? They will tell you that you are wrong about your NASCAR "time out" statement. I have never seen a race, but at least I know you are dead wrong about the rules.
I also know you are not man enough to respond.
You will eventually be fired for gross incompentence, lack of professionalism, loss of readership, budget cuts, TW being acquired or by a random act of kindness/objectivity by your boss.
I'll start a pool.

Doc: Resetting the competition is one thing.
Catching up during a time out is another.
With all the technology available, why can't they put the cars back where they were at the caution flag?

Note to horse racing Gene from previous blog:
I made so much on Denis of Cork, I sprained my back lifting the bread.
The only thing to worry about with that nice horse is he might have the tendency to lay back a bit much; as fields get better, there will be more good stuff to have to pass.
Before the race, he was 46-1 on the future book.

Mr. Picker, congrats on the capital infusion. I look forward to doing the same on the 15th so don't tell anyone else. I sure like that running style for the Derby; remember Monarchos and Fusaichi Pegasus.
Doc Smarba

Dear Pick,
Actually, a caution flag is not a "time out". Action continues in the pits during a caution flag period. Depending on teamwork and strategy, positions may be gained or lost in the pits during a caution period.
-
What do you propose? Eliminating pit strategy and teamwork because we have the technology to space the cars out?
-
Similar situation: Boxing. In between rounds, the fighters have the opportunity to "catch up". That is, regain some of their strength and composure. Should we use technology to return each boxer the the level of pain experienced as the previous round was ending?

World Picker:
You still don't seem to understand the rules: drivers must hold their position, i.e. cannot pass anyone when the caution flag comes out. Yes, they can close the gap between them and the car in front of them. But they are behind that car for a reason: they are slower and will still be slower when the green flag comes back out.
I told you that you were wrong.
BTW: you and Gene couldn't pick a winning horse during the instant replay. I bet you two spend all your "bread" at that amateur track over in Hot Springs, Ark.
If you can pick a 46-1 shot (to win)out of the Racing Form Past Performance you are reading it wrong.
Steve: Don't forget Hiroshima.
World Picker is sneaky and refuses to identify himself. It seems to give him courage.
It is time for him to come out from behind his pc monitor so we can see him.
Who is World Picker? Why is he afraid to identify himself? Is Zach his brother? Or his sister?
MIKE

NIT picker, I don't see you revealing yourself---or do you have the luxury of talking big game and not backing any of it up? You remind me of a baby that constantly cries abnoxiously loud in order to receive attention. Hopefully the picker will ignore you until you cry yourself to sleep.

Y'know, I visit this site roughly after every lunar eclipse and the one constant...the one glaring consistency...is the Nit Picker. He strikes me as a rather sad case...one who searches for - no, demands - attention from a blog that he probably doesn't receive in real life. The errors he makes in spelling and syntax would take far too long to cite here, and the logical non-sequiturs that arise either from his inability to read other entries (which he blatantly misrepresents) or just from jus plain ignorance are simply astounding. My recommendation? Don't take him seriously and whatever you do, never...ever...dignify his entries with a reply.
See you after the next eclipse in 2010.

What is this "Women's Basketball" you speak of and what is OU????
Nit Picker
Methodist Hummer: you mispelled just. You should take your own advice and not reply. You are stupid.
World Picker: Seems the OU football program doesn't " barely break even" as you claim:
Football revenues: $28.5 million; football expenses: $15.1 million. Total Athletics is about B/E: Total revenues: $66.3; total expenses: $65.9.
Your 2/12 post responding to me was either a lie or you failed to do the research or I suppose you could claim a huge typo. In any case, you should be fired.
Take the Methodist Hummer with you.
You are both ignorant fan bigots.
Nit Picker

Mike:
I advocate World Picker not be allowed to ridicule, criticize and lie in secret. I believe he should be held accountable for his statements by being required to identify himself to his readers, both to those who agree with him and to those who do not.
Once World Picker is outed, then I believe all posters, such as you and I, should also be required to identify ourselves as a condition of posting.
I firmly believe it will raise the level of discussions (postings) in both directions.
As it is now, World Picker is not accountable for anything he says.
Alpha Dog: I don't know what that thing called womens BB is, I just know the OU one beat KSU and the OSU one lost to KSU.
But, make no mistake, I do also know the OU one lost to the Baylor one and the OSU one beat the OU one.
The real point is that World Picker has nothing to say about any of the above except his ridicule of the OU one when it lost. He is a fan bigot.
You are one of his minions.

NIT PICKER......Ive seen your blogs on here for months and months.....what is it that YOU do all day my friend....what pc monitor are you hding behind? I see a sercurty guy at the library sitting behind a computer with a 1/2 eaten double cheeseburger and musturd running down his shirt...I think to myself "AH hah!! I've found him....its the NIT Picker, with all this free time to just sit and write blogs all day long" get a life joker
WORLDPICKER

The Nit Picker does OU more harm than Stoops making more than all the science department profs combined (see new blog).
He's a frustrated writer who can't get on with Sooners Hourly or one of those homer publications that does articles about how Venables should be coaching for the Packers.
Doc: What I propose is putting the cars back where they were when the time-out was called.
ALPHA DOG

NIT,
Please, allow me.....
ERIC, do you mean Mus-tard, not Mus-turd?.....somewhere in there is something
very Freudian.
Don't get excited NIT, we aren't going to take long hot showers together now. You still get to hand out the towels in the locker room for all OU home games by yourself.
Nit Picker
Dear Eric,
I am glad you have seen my blogs on here for "months and months". What is it that I do all day? I might ask you the same question. Believe me, we aren't friends.
Is that your coney in the corner or did Alpha Dog have an accident?
Alpha Dog,
You are starting to ramble incoherently. Take your meds, then take a tepid shower with World Picker. Eric grabbed your coney.
World Picker,
As far as being a writer, I don't feel I am in very good compan. Of course, I do not get paid for writing. What have you ever written?
I make as much as Stoops, so what? How can I harm him by criticizing you? At least he uses his real name.
Science professors? They are a dime a dozen anywhere but MIT.
I note that neither you nor your minions can come up with anything to refute my postions, other than to attack me personally. That is frustation, pal.
You still don't get it, it isn't a time out.
It is time for World Picker to crawl out of his hidey hole and put his real name on his blog. Secrecy produces mediocracy and precludes accountability.
No more secret columnists/bloggers.
Finally: Am I the only one that finds it troubling that the attorney defending Reggie Bush in the Lake lawsuit is reported to also be an analyst for ESPN? Is it really true?
Research department, please get on that.
