Death threat for ex-OSU player?
Published: 4/24/2009 10:06 AM

Former Tulsa World sports writer Marc J. Spears, who now covers the Celtics for the Boston Globe, uncovered this bit of information about Celtics guard and former Oklahoma State player Tony Allen:
Allen, who is from Chicago, was back in his hometown for Game 3 of a first-round playoff series. Extra security was on hand around the Celtics' bench because, according to several NBA sources, Allen has received death threats.
Allen also received death threats prior to a March 17 regular season game at Chicago, but did not make the trip do to a thumb injury.
Spears asked Allen about the death threats.
"Is that what you're going to write about?" Allen said, repeating himself before walking away.
Celtics president Rich Gotham declined comment, citing a policy not to talk about security matters.
Allen had a tough guy reputation when he arrived at OSU, but former coach Eddie Sutton took pride in the way that Allen (following one incident at a 24-hour burger joint) learned to handle himself on and off the court. Allen led the Cowboys to the Final Four in 2004.
Maybe Allen should consider avoiding his hometown. Allen was present when a fight occurred outside a Chicago restaurant in 2005 and the fracas led to shooting. Allen had his day in court and was found not guilty of aggravated battery.

And that right there, is why I love Tony Allen.

This is a big problem. These athletes are good enough at what they do to escape the rough neighborhoods they come from, but then everybody in said neighborhood wants a piece of them. If the athlete doesn't oblige, they're seen as turning their nose up at the 'hood and that can lead to them being in grave danger. We have seen this time and time again. Tramel is actually right, it is best for them to just stay away.

I would think it would be hard to hit a jump shot if there is a hit on you.
