Decision time approaches for Wes Lunt

Wes Lunt has qualified academically for a mid-term graduation from Rochester (Ill.) High School, but apparently the 6-foot-5 quarterback recruit still hasn’t decided whether to graduate early and enroll at Oklahoma State for the spring semester.

After leading Rochester to its second consecutive Illinois Class 4A title, Lunt attended the Dec. 3 Bedlam game in Stillwater. If Lunt is at OSU during the spring, he would compete for the Cowboys’ starting job with junior-to-be Clint Chelf and redshirt freshman J.W. Walsh.

If Lunt decides to stay in Rochester – and does sign with the Cowboys on Feb. 2 – he would move to Stillwater in June.

A source described the probability of an early Lunt enrollment at OSU as being “60 percent.” Lunt’s mid-term graduation decision presumably must occur before Wednesday – the day on which Rochester High School’s next semester begins.

While the Cowboys are in Scottsdale, Ariz., to prepare for Monday’s Fiesta Bowl meeting with Stanford, Lunt also is headed to the Phoenix area. On Tuesday, at the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Chase Field, Lunt plays in the inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl – an all-star game for high school seniors.

After missing Rochester’s first four games because of a foot injury, Lunt wound up with a nine-game total of more than 3,000 passing yards. He appears to have a big-time arm and franchise-quarterback potential.
