Destined for Venables' bulletin board?

The football stranglehold Oklahoma and Texas own over the rest of the Big 12 tightened recently when Dave Matter of the Columbia (Mo.) Daily Tribune ranked the top 12 coordinators in the conference.

#1 -- Will Muschamp, Texas
#2 -- Kevin Wilson, OU
#3 -- Greg Davis, Texas
#4 -- Brent Venables, OU

If Matter just motivated Missouri, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech to work a little harder this summer to try to unseat the Big 12's twin towers, he might have also motivated Venables.

"Venables was the Big 12’s Muschamp before the Big 12 had a Muschamp," Matter writes. "Known for his sideline intensity and a penchant for developing lethal pass-rushers, Venables was the league’s boy wonder assistant for years — until Muschamp arrived last season."

Also, it probably doesn't feel good to be looking up at Davis in anyone's rankings. Venables, along with Mike Stoops, had his way with the Texas offensive coordinator until Vince Young came of age in 2005. Now, with Colt McCoy's help, Davis has rallied to close the gap.

Venables and Davis have matched wits and players for a decade now, OU winning six times and Texas four.

Venables seems a little high at #4.
