Dicky V-ery Deserving

Guess who Eddie Sutton thinks is deserving of a spot in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame? He's not lobbying for himself, but he is lobbying for someone who has been Vitale-ly important to the enormous growth and popularity of college basketball.
Dick Vitale, like Sutton, is a finalist for induction in the basketball hall of fame. Sutton said Vitale deserves to make it. Vitale, like him or not (and I do) has contributed to the popularity of college basketball and, perhaps, has become the face of college basketball in the ESPN era.
A couple of decades ago, Benjamin Spock (sorry, not the guy who was on Star Trek) was the person who most qualified as a diaper dandy. Now you can't hear the phrase "diaper dandy," or several other Dicky V-isms, without thinking of the man who gave college basketball a new lexicon.
Vitale is a prime time player in the world of college basketball. And I bet a lot of hall of fame voters feel the same way about Vitale that Sutton does.

Tulsa World sports writer Jimmie Tramel is a former class president at Locust Grove High School. He graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with a journalism degree and, while attending college, was sports editor of the Pryor Daily Times. He joined the Tulsa World on Oct. 17, 1989, the same day an earthquake struck the World Series. He is the OSU basketball beat writer and a columnist and feature writer during football season. In 2007, he wrote a book about Oklahoma State football with former Cowboy coach Pat Jones.
