Did Mick Jagger really taunt the Sooners?

A great day in the Emig household -- a pair of U2 tickets showed up in a FedEx envelope. I won't share how much I shelled out. I'm pretty sure I got jobbed. I'm also pretty sure the band's best days are behind it.

But I don't really care. I've wanted to see these guys in a stadium since I was in college and missed their Joshua Tree show in Kansas City.

I've been thinking a lot about the last time I saw a concert at Owen Field -- the Stones' show Oct. 28, 1997. And the thing that's killing me is I can't remember if Mick Jagger made some joke about Oklahoma's sad-sack football team at the time.

I remember a lot of jokes leading up to the actual concert. How Keith Richards could beat OU's corners deep. How Charlie Watts hit the drums harder than OU's linemen hit the blocking sled. How the Sooners would be better off with the Stones' playlist than John Blake's.

And I swear Mick took a shot between songs somewhere during the set. But I can't say for sure.

By the way, no chance Bono has a laugh next October, right? I guess he could make a crack about the Sooners and the BCS before launching into "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." But I don't see it.

Don't recall any comment myself, although it might have been the beer that we cleverly hid in our down jackets.

Do remember Steve Owens giving Mick a Sooner Jersey though and the opener, Sheryl Crow.

i used to have the show on cd. i don't remember him saying anything like that.
i was there and the stones were very cool , and at coaches restaurant in bricktown there is a picture of all the band and Steve Owens wearing Sooners jerseys.

I can see U2 dedicating a song to the Sooners: 'Even Better Than The Real Thing'
(Sing like Bono: The sun won't melt our crimson wings tonight....)

Nothing is a bigger joke than U2. Mick Jagger can give a hard time to anyone he wants.

You are correct. Mick Jagger did make a comment...something to the effect of being favored over the sooners. Wish I could remember the exact quote.
