Did UTEP quarterback provide bulletin-board material?

UTEP's Nick Lamaison is Conference USA's preseason first-team quarterback.

UTEP quarterback Nick Lamaison sat across from me at Conference USA media day in Dallas last month and honestly answered a question about Landry Jones.

“I’ve seen him play and he’s a great player and I have a lot of respect for him, but Sept 1, if he’s the guy, or whatever quarterbacks come into a game, you always want to outperform the other guy,” Lamaison said.

There was no bite in his voice, just a matter-of-the-fact answer to a question about an opposing quarterback.

But it seems to have stirred up Oklahoma’s defensive captain David King, who said this unsolicited:

“Their quarterback is pretty good. (Lamaison) can run. I believe he came out and said he wants to out-do Landry,” King said. “We’ve got to come out there and make sure that doesn’t happen on Saturday.”

King was later asked if Lamaison’s words struck a nerve.

“Anytime an opposing player comes out and says I wanna outdo this guy, it’s going to reach over to the defense,” King said. “I’m going to challenge our defense this week, starting up front with the D-line, to make sure he doesn’t have the kind of game he wants to have, and let Landry shine like he’s capable of doing.”

As for Jones, it remains business as usual. The OU quarterback didn’t even know about Lamaison’s comments until Monday.

“I’m going to go out there and try to play Oklahoma football,” Jones said. “That’s what I’m here for and that’s we're going to try to do. I’m not out to try and outplay anybody, I’m just trying to go out and win the game.”

You are reaching Eric.
Fumby: First off, cool nickname ...

I wrote a blog earlier this month with Lamaison's comments at Media Day. King brought the story up without any prompting on Monday and added that he was going to challenge the defense with what he said.

Don't know if it's too much of a reach when the players are bringing it up on game week without being asked about it. It wouldn't have stuck with them that long.

thanks for the compliment...i do agree with you to a point (you say either and i say "either"). i just don't believe its bulletin board material when facing an extreme uphill battle, your inner athlete will (should) come out and challenge whatever obstacle is out there. i think Lamaison would like to fire up his teammates as well. with that being said...although i am a die hard OSU fan i always enjoyed your columns when you reported for TU and look forward to seeing them with the 'other' state team.
