Difficult Doesn't Make it the Best

Arnold Palmer was very clear. Just because a golf course is hard doesn't make it the best.
That doesn't mean he hates Oakmont Country Club. By contrast, he loves Oakmont, just an hour or so from where Palmer grew up.
It was the first maor golf course he ever played.
Yet, Palmer said there are a lot of great golf courses around the world and not all of them are even close to as hard as Oakmont.
Oakmont members take great pride that their course is one of the toughest on the planet. They love to bring guests and watch them suffer.
Even the locker room at Oakmont is upstairs and not air conditioned. Members wants folks to remember Oakmont as a very, very difficult place.
That much they are accomplishing this week.
The USGA didn't need to do much to Oakmont to get it ready for the U.S. Open. In fact, some members say the greens had to be slowed down for the Open.
But there is a limit to how much suffering we want to watch. Yes, it is nice to see the pros taking wild hacks out of the rough. It is nice to see the pros run it past the hole and off the green.
Still, it is probably too hard if not one of the top 156 players in the world can crack par in the tournament.
Making it difficult is one thing. Oakmont may have gone too far.

Did we have a +1 finish at Southern Hills? I'm thinking Mayfair.
