Does Channel 6 Like TU Enough?

Here's the way TV works.
You lead with the story that you consider to be the most important.
Thursday, Oklahoma State beat Texas Tech in a ho-hum basketball game, and Tulsa defeated UAB is a thrilling overtime contest.
Oklahoma State is approximately 72 miles from here.
Tulsa is a local team.
Yet on the ten o'clock report, Channel 6 here led with OSU's victory over Texas Tech, then trotted out coverage of TU's win over UAB.
Pass the flipper.

Bingo!!!
Welcome to a local TV sports director who is owned lock, stock & barrel by OSU, with a sidekick equally owned by OU.
I like local TV stations. KOTV does not fall in that category. Blevins runs the sports departments of both OKC's channel 9 and Tulsa's channel 6.
And Holcomb either has no pride in this fair city ... or has no journalistic integrity.
I really like Al Jerkins, but his radio days seem to have flavored how he steers Channel Two's coverage ... and Chris Lincoln doesn't seem to direct KTUL's efforts as strongly as I'd hoped.
He loves TU and tries to even out their coverage ... but Diaz is just soooo in love with the Big XII and himself that Channel Eight falls short.
Thank God for the Tulsa World and the Picker for treating TU (and ORU in bball) equally ... because they are local.
Thanks, Picker!!!

Par for the course...there's no rhyme or reason for what they do. OSU leads every sportscast on channel six until Eddie Sutton goes to San Francisco and then they have to consider whether to lead with the Dons or not!
Really ridiculous. No one is saying not to give OSU their due respect, but the fact that TU is outwardly disrespected by that station and that their sports director is on OSU employee is simply unacceptable.

What channel will the C-USA final game be on (with or without Tulsa)???
6!!! That's an incredibly easy connection to make too, if only for self-promotion and possibly more ratings. But no, I guess it's not a big deal.
Even if Tulsa does make it to the biggest game of the past few seasons, it will only be on their channel because it was scheduled previously and OSU still has WAY more money.

Channel 6 should support TU first or just move their station to STOOLWATER!!! A sorry representation for the city of Tulsa. I will only watch them if they promote TU more!!!

Excellent point, Picker. Flipping channels tonight revealed the following in order of presentation:
1. OSU's loss to Texas
2. OU's snoozer win over Colorado
3. Replay of OSU WOMEN's basketball win over Texas
4. Commercials
5. TU's win over UTEP to advance to conf tourney final against #2 Memphis.
6. ORU's conf tourney win
That's why I try to stick with on-line news outlets to view better stories about our local Tulsa team.
Pathetic.

Holcomb and Blevins are arrogant and the biggest homers for their schools. It makes me sick to see how they kiss butt so much.
Hey, lets bring Switzer and his granddaughters on again. That was so entertaining! YEA!
Hey Blevins and Holcomb: Quit holding Stoops and Switzers nuts for them. Thats what they have underwear for!

What a long decline must have occurred at KOTV. On the air, there used to be TU graduates like Bob Losure and Gailard Sartain. Now the university couldn't get air time unless it bought it. Perhaps they could buy the first commercial time on the newscast to get information out about TU sports. What a pathetic station KOTV has become. Its too bad a decent corporation like Belo no longer owns KOTV. Judging by the comments I have heard, Griffin communications must be a very poorly run company.

It's ironic that in the Tulsa World there's a commentary about television coverage of TU. Yesterday, TU won its second straight overtime game to get to the C-USA final game. Is that the lead in the World? NO! Only OU's win and OSU's loss get any coverage. Shame on you, World.
Hmmm...

That's really funny how channel 6 is getting bashed for their coverage of TU when they were the only local television station in Memphis covering the Golden Hurricane at the Conference USA Tournament.

Tyler you ignorant redneck farmer. OTV is contractually obligated to carry the C-USA title game...I'm only half-surprised that they didn't run some "Gimme the Mike" promo or Oklahoma Gems show. I hate watching the KOTV "sports" coverage because it means ten minutes of red this, orange that...even when TU was handing it to both those schools in basketball...an OU loss or an OSU hang-nail on the starting point guard was covered first, not that TU had just won 32 games! Granted we are building our way back to those days, but pig-farmer Holcomb needs to understand that OSU is not going anywhere soon while TU continues to bring in players that will soon challenge in the NCAA's. When was the last time OSU had a 7-footer who was coordinated on offense and frightened players who tried to bring the ball to the basket...yes that's right, Big Country 15 years ago. We'll see how it goes when TU challenges for another C-USA title in football next year while Boone Pickens U. fights to beat D-IAA opponents, gets clobbered in Big XII play and wonders to see if the Independence Bowl is interested in them, and in basketball where OSU beats up on the local convent teams, goes 6-10 in the Big XII and wonders if they'll host an NIT game when TU is fighting its way to recapture the golden years of TU basketball...Holcomb sucks and he should get his nose out of Blevins' a$$.

Just like the newspaper, TV needs to report on what most of their viewers want to hear about. Although TU is the local team, there are far more OSU and OU fans and alumni in Tulsa than there are TU fans and alumni. Therefore, OSU and OU are going to be the lead stories when all three are competing at the same time.

Did anyone notice the 300 people that were at the game when TU played mighty UTEP? Case solved!

The TU Fans should look at the Oklahoman articles about OSU. They try to downgrade everything OSU does. Did you read J. Carlson's article about Bobby Reid? Have you noticed that the Oklahoman goes to great effort to report OSU achievements in a derogatory manner? While I agree that Tulsa should support TU, the economics of the large OU and OSU fan base in Tulsa dictates coverage.

To ANDY:
I don't take issue with your time line of TV news coverage, nor do I disagree with the basic premise that OU and OSU get most of the TV coverage.
But, you should note that the TV announcers kept you watching - through the commercials - to see the later stories, namely the TU story and the ORU stories.
The point being that the TV station wants to keep you watching so they put the stories they think are most important to their local market AFTER as many commercials as possible. It is common practice. They obviously believe that their audience wants to see the TU and ORU stories and will keep teasing you with them so you will stay tuned (and see the commercials).
Don't drink the World Picker's kool aid on this issue..nor on the radio talk show drivel he spews. He and his newspaper are in direct competition with both and it behooves him to try to make them look bad. World Picker is a bum for doing it. If he had any integrity or moral fiber he would not do it.
But we know he doesn't. He is weak, as well as slimey.
