Don't Tell Cincy This Secret!
Published: 9/22/2010 1:55 PM
Last Modified: 9/22/2010 1:55 PM

Somebody said that the other day, they drove up to where OU was practicing football and heard that "The Eyes of Texas" was blaring over the loud speakers.

"The Eyes of Texas," a variation of "I've Been Working on the Railroad," is the Texas Longhorn fight song.

The thing is, OU doesn't play Texas next. It plays Cincinnati next.

Is this the classic look-past scenario?

Or does Cincy simply lack a fight song to rebel against?

It does at least suggest that Stoops has come to realize that beating Missouri twice to nab a soft conference title sometimes is not as important as beating Texas.

Again Pick, a conference championship is ALWAYS worth more (no matter who is playing) than a victory over a rival.

Last I checked, BCS bowls didn't invite teams based on whether or not they beat Texas.
Dr. Strangelove (2 years ago)
I think throwing out the AF tape is a mistake. OU is only a 2 TD favorite against Cincy, looking past them could be a very bad idea.
Arbythree (2 years ago)
Hey pick. What should the Sooners be playing? WKRP in Cincinnati????
The Picker (2 years ago)
A3, congrats, that was not a bad one.

Mike, what's wrong with beating Texas occasionally AND going to a BCS bowl (and occasionally winning one)?

If you don't think beating Texas is Job One now, imagine what losing five of six will bring.
Glenn616 (2 years ago)
OU needs to beat Texas this season for recruiting purposes. OU gets a vast majority of its players from the State of Texas. In fact, Adrian Peterson played football for OU instead of Texas due to OU having beaten Texas for 4 consecutive seasons from 2000-2003.
Dash Riprock (2 years ago)
The OU-Texas series is a long list of streaks, Texas winning 4 of 5, OU winning 4 straight, etc. Those streaks have a major impact on recruiting and any fan who thinks otherwise probably should only use their mellon as a hat rack.
McBrain (2 years ago)
The problem with throwing out the AF game tape is that the Sooners don't tackle well, and it doesn't matter who is on the tape. Vulnerables better learn.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Pick, there's nothing wrong with that at all. In fact, I'm sure that's what SToops and every OU fan would prefer.

But if the choice comes between winning a conference championship and grabbing an automatic bid to a BCS bowl OR winning a rivalry game, I'm going with the former every time.
Loki (2 years ago)
Pick's persistent Longhorn envy continues. If winning the conference championship is such a cakewalk, why have the fearsome Texans failed to do it with any regularity?

Ignatz (2 years ago)
Stoops has said since day one that his goal for the team every season is to win the conference championship. He has never stated that his goal every year is for OU to win a national championship or beat Texas. Therefore, by his standards, he is a success. This ain't the New York Yankees, people!
eglkeeper (2 years ago)
If there is no goal to beat Texas then why play the game Einstein?
Not alot of sense being made here.

By the way, Brave not Sooners...

What part of what the picker is saying about defeating Texas do some of you not understand? For OU, beating Texas is the well spring from which all good things flow, recruiting purposes being no.1 and yes reaching the title game for the south for years now have gone through Dallas in Oct. Getting there without beating Texas is a very hard road to travel. How many times is Texas really going to drop a game in Lubbock? Or even longer odds in Stillwater? So beating Texas is a must. I also maintain playing them in Texas is a must as well. The Texas recruits come here just for that. Texas does not need the Sooners as much the Sooners need them. They would roll right along without the Sooners. Ask Michigan if beating tOSU is important. How has Michigan done mining Ohio players, some of the best in the country, nowadays? How many Big 12 titles has OU won without beating Texas? How many national titles? So yea, beating them is more imortant then backing in to fluke titles won two years ago. How is that year remembered? Yea OU won Big 12 thats the year when Texas whupped OU.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Don, in 20 years nobody is going to have a banner or a trophy for a rivalry win. The average person won't be able to remember who beat who. But there will be banners and trophies for Big 12 championships regardless of how they were gotten or who was beaten to achieve them.

Is beating Texas important? Yes. Is it as important as a Conference Championship? No.

Texas is just a game on the schedule just as important as any other conference game that you must win in order to reach the final goal--the Big 12 championship.
dcood (2 years ago)
Geez Pick, change the record. The Big 12 is a decent conference and very good at the top. The Big 10 is full of a bunch of 'Missouris' and the Pac 10 has some terrible teams at the middle and bottom, the ACC is horrendous and the Big East not much better... so quit spouting how bad the Big 12 is, we heard you the first 50 times..
tulsandn (2 years ago)
OU respects Nebraska - Kinda like fighting with your brother....

OU ignores Okie St. - Kinda like having the punk little brother who's too little to beat up....

OU hates Texas - They are the kid down the street you always fight with & throw rocks at whenever you see him and he does the same with you....
dcood (2 years ago)
KSU, OSU, A&M, Mizzou, and TT all decent teams. ISU, CU, and Baylor bad, KU a mystery,OU, NEB, and TX all top 8 teams... How are they not at least the 2nd best in the country behind your man-crush league, the SEC?
The Picker (2 years ago)
Thank you Don.

See what has to be delt with on a daily basis.

Lost to Texas agains this year, and there will be about four people who would be satisfied with a remaining shot at a conference title.

Playing the Texas fight song at practice the week of the Cincy game is about as strange as it gets; unless Cincy is even worse than it has appeared on TV.

Just for the record OU beat Texas 5 years straight not 4.2000,2001,2002,2003 and 2004.OU also won in 2007.Texas won in 99,05,06,08,and 09.That makes Bob record vs Texas 6-5.And Texas was very lucky that OU suffered some major injuries last year and in 08 or Bob would be 8-3 vs Texas..The truth is this rivalry has always ran in cycles, and most times these games can go either way,it just depends on who gets the most breaks. Now Picker I know you would love for all of us Sooner fans to think Texas has the superior program but sorry buddy that just isn't going to happen.Just a reminder, since Bob Stoops took over at OU,he has won 6 conference championships to Mack Browns 2.OU has won 1 National Championship and played for 3 others while Mack is 1-1 in NC games.Oklahoma has a population of 3.6 million compared to Texas population of 25.3 million.Considering the vast difference of athletes OU has to choose from vs Texas I'd say OU has done pretty well wouldn't you?Oh one other thing Picker,OU 7 National Championships,Texas 5.

Meximike, from what I know of you, you are an OSU fan, so you go ahead and cling to these "trophies" you know golf, wrestling, girls shot put. Beating Texas for OU is a must to stay on top, as in the top 10 also to stay on the map. Adrian Peterson is one of those recruits OU took from Texas due to the wins over Texas in early 2000's and the list goes on and on. Without win over Texas all other things become next to impossible to accomplish, so yea, beating Texas is job 1. After that everything falls into place. Your OSU Cowboys? They put a few years in a row of beating both OU and Texas, then you will see OSU step up to the big boys. I am a TU, OSU OU fan with first alleigance to OU. Texas, Ohio State, USC, Alabama all have far deeper pockets then my Sooners, all would be just fine in whatever league you throw them in, OU needs Texas recruits, and lately we have been getting some good ones, but only after Texas has scraped off whatever they want first. And OSU? Licking bottom of bowl. That doesn't mean there are not gems amongst these guys nor does that mean there are better coaches at Texas, frankly I think Bob Stoops has done a remarkable job beating Texas like he has. They always start ahead of the Sooners at least on paper. It begins with beating Texas for OU. Oh, and I remember every win and more so every loss against Texas. You are wrong about title from two years ago. It will ALWAYS be remembered and brought up yearly, and there will be those that say OU backed into title, you know like OSU fans.
Loki (2 years ago)
Mystified I have to bring this up. My point with respect to conference championships has always been the following:

(From BCS selection rules)

"Team Selection Procedures

The bowls will select their participants from two pools: (1) automatic qualifiers, all of which must be selected, and, (2) at-large teams, if fewer than 10 teams qualify automatically. The following sequence will be used when establishing pairings:

1. The top two teams in the final BCS Standings will be placed in the National Championship Game ("NCG")."

Beating your hated rival is wonderful. It offers an opportunity to engage in the most spittle-flecked of smack talk.

If, on the other hand, your aspirations are aimed somewhat higher, WIN THE DAM CONFERENCE TITLE.

If you are in the Big 12, winning your conference places you in hot contention for paragraph 1 from above cited BCS rules.
noveds (2 years ago)
Sadly, I think the B12 will fall apart in a year or two, or three.
My wish is that OU displays the balls to tell texas to go wherever and OU heads for the SEC.
That said, I'd hate to see the Shootout end.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Don's World, I have no idea why you decided to bash me as an OSU fan. Not once in any of my posts did I say anything bad about OU. In fact, much of what I said has already been said by Coach Stoops a number of times. Championships are all that matter.

Loki hit it right on the head. Rivalries are fun but championships should be the ultimate goal.

You bringing OSU into this is pretty childish but hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.
Don's World (2 years ago)
Just the difference in the fan base Meximike. My being an OU fan makes me knowledgeable in the world of college football and what it takes to not only win said championships year in year out as OU has done in every conference it has been a part of, recruiting is the key, even more so now, when you can't stock pile kids just to keep them away from rivals. Beating Texas is job 1, beating Texas is job 2, crushing Texas is job 3, then come the recruits, then comes beating all of you little schools, a win over Texas this week is far more significant then conference banner which was won two years ago under disputed circumstances, now had said title led to NATIONAL TITLE, that is something to hang your hat on. Now that is how the big boys see it, now when we need tiddlywink, equestrian, how to grow biggest squash national titles we will look to yours and Loki's advice. Now mein freunds, go and look up how many National Titles OU has won WITHOUT beating Texas. You guessed it....NONE. Texas National Titles without beating OU? Right again. This isn't chicken or the egg situation, beating Texas is first and FOREMOST. What are the chances of OU going to title game this year without win over Texas? Oh and as far as bringing OSU into this, that was just a perk. You should be huge OU fans this week, that will give the Pokes a two way go at winning the south, they will only have to beat ONE of the big boys. At least I hope that is the way their season shakes out.
