Doomsday Scenario for Rookie NFL QB's
Published: 8/23/2010 1:14 PM
Last Modified: 8/23/2010 1:14 PM

In his first quarter of exhibition play in the NFL, Tim Tebow pulled one of his Junior High Joe stunts and tried to run one in from inside the ten.

A safety took aim and had about a 10-yard running start and almost caved in Tebow's left side. Six inches more toward the safety's left, and Tebow would have been dreaming about throwing those cute little jump passes against Kentucky.

Tex-ex McCoy has been throwing weak interceptions, one of which seemed to travel end-over-end, and seems destined for Arena action.

Notre Dame-ex Clausen doesn't telegraph his deliveries, he calls the night before and leaves voice mail about where they'll be.

And OU-ex Sam B., as reported in this spot last week, he's in big trouble because of two things, a lack of foot speed and elusiveness in the pocket, and blockhead St. Louis management that will have him playing way too much.

High draft pick QB's seldom show up well, who is the last, Peyton Manning in 1958?

If Bradford is too slow to beat the nose guard back to the pocket, they run the shotgun more.

What's the difference in the shotgun and the spread, anyway?

P. Manning and Brady seem to run the shotgun 90 percent of the time.

The spread uses more shorter tosses, and more backs catching the ball.

But Bradford can get it downfield, or could at least against Iowa State in Norman.

Methinks Picker-boy is searching for topics. While there is something about Tebow I loathe (perhaps his self-proclaimed Sainthood although he plays a "game" whereby on every play someone on the field could suffer life-long crippling injuries starting with a snap he calls),everyone of these guys could become adequate, if not brilliant NFL QB's. After all, there are 30 some-odd teams and most have two or three roster guys now who can run an offense. True, the nature of the NFL is such that no longer is a "great" QB needed to reach, must less win, a Super Bowl, and low scoring, defense dominated games with 50+ yard field goals are often the determinant, nevertheless, a good coach will do his best to style an offense that compliments his Qb (Good Lord, Rex Grossman was in a Super Bowl!)and I think stiff-legged, slow to duck Sam B. will eventually do just fine.

Tim Tebow will learn real fast that these men in the NFL are not like the boys in college....

That being said, I actually believe that Tim Tebow will have an outstanding NFL career, he is a natural born leader with desire & those kind of guys always find a way....

I haven't seen Sam display the killer attitude/instinct that the NFL demands, Sam is a real nice guy & now he also has a great bank account.... Sam's cool, I believe he paid attention in college & he can make that money last a few lifetimes....

Bradford should NOT play this year for that semi-pro team.

What was P. Manning in his first year, something like 1-15?

What was Bradford's best performance at OU?

I'm sidin 'ganst you this time, Picker. At least as far as Bradford is concerned. While he may be slow-of-foot, it's hard to tell given the no-show o-line that let's nose guards come through unblocked. By the way, wasn't Marino slow-of-foot as well?

As for the rest, Tebow is a "role player" (translation: 3 plays a game, tops) at best. McCoy will play for several NFL practice squads, perhaps a pre-season game or two in his 20-year career. Clauson may confuse fans by wearing #5, reminding those of another Notre Dame QB who's pro expliots didn't exactly set the world on fire. Call him "Rick".

Question: how do SEC teams that run the off-tackle 80% of the time win national championships? Gol-dangit Big "12" coaches, put nine in the box and DARE them to throw downfield. Stop making Tebow-types look supernatural!

Joe Flacco and Matt Ryan weren't too shabby as rookie QBs straight out of college.

What's hilarious to me is that the Pick is judging all of these kids as premature failures and the season hasn't even started yet.

Let's try waiting at least a couple games, shall we?

Tim Tebow can't keep running the ball in the pros the way he did in college. Otherwise, he'll last half a season at most.

It's too early to tell on Bradford. The question will be whether he can escape from NFL-caliber pressure in a regular season game.

Colt McCoy:
I'm not sure if he has the arm-strength to make the throws at the NFL level.

Black Eyed Clausen:
Overrated. I'm sorry, but what did this guy accomplish in college other than losing a bar fight?
The Picker (2 years ago)
Please note that according to today's Cleveland Plain Dealer, McCoy is on the "bubble" and might not even make the team!

And ESPN's Kiper said he was the next Drew Brees.

Still think Bradford can only get it 'downfield' vs Iowa St?? Hard to throw it much better than he did last night.
dcood (2 years ago)
BTW Pick, his best performance at OU was probably the year they lost to Texas 45-35 when he had about 450 yards and 5 tds... but Im sure you'll say Texas wasnt any good.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Dc, he had a great practice all right. So did the other scrub quarterbacks vs. NE in the second half.

The coaches did a good job rolling him out.

It looked all of St. Louis was playing against air most of the eve.

Still, he threw some rockets and should have had a couple more completions.
