Dorris and his coffee remain intact after Christmas accident

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – On the day before the 2010 Hawaii Bowl, University of Tulsa defensive end Cory Dorris sustained a broken hand.

During preparation for last season’s Armed Forces Bowl, he was hobbled by a sprained ankle.

This week, Dorris came perilously close to experiencing another pre-bowl setback – and this one could have been a lot worse than a busted hand or a swollen ankle.

Following Thursday’s Liberty Bowl practice at Memphis University School, as Dorris was interviewed by members of the Tulsa and Memphis media, Dorris was asked to identify his favorite Christmas gift.

His response: “Being alive.”

At 7:30 a.m. on Christmas Day, after having purchased coffee at a Quik Trip store, Dorris headed toward his father’s home in Jenks. Driving his 1995 Dodge pickup, Dorris was unaware that some Tulsa-area streets and highways had become glazed with ice. Southbound on Hwy 75, near the 71st Street exit, he encountered ice.

“There wasn’t any ice on the TU campus, but I guess it sleeted around Jenks,” he said. “I hit some ice and did two 360s on the highway. I hit a (guardrail) and that was the end of it. I busted a taillight and messed up my back bumper and the muffler, but I was able to drive it.”

When TU faces Iowa State on Monday, Dorris ends his career with a program-record 51st career start. When his truck was out of control and he had no idea how the situation would end, did Dorris have a split-second thought about the injury potential or possibly missing the Liberty Bowl?

“I didn’t think of any of that,” Dorris said. “When I was spinning, I just picked up my coffee out of the (cup holder) I didn’t want it to spill everywhere. I got pretty lucky with this deal. I didn’t twist anything or break any bones – and I didn’t spill my coffee.”
